Overview

IEC 60204-1:1997/AMD1:1999 is an essential amendment to the international standard focusing on the electrical equipment of industrial machines. This amendment provides clarifications and enhancements to Part 1 of the IEC 60204-1 standard, which establishes general requirements to ensure the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical equipment used in machinery. Developed by the IEC Technical Committee 44, specializing in the safety of machinery and electrotechnical aspects, this amendment aims to improve the applicability, guidance, and integration of the standard within machinery safety protocols.

Key Topics

  • General Requirements Update
The amendment adds critical guidance on the practical use of IEC 60204-1, emphasizing that a simple reference to the full standard is insufficient. It highlights the necessity of selecting applicable clauses, options, or modifications based on specific machine needs and risk assessments.

  • Annex F: Guide for Use
A comprehensive new annex (Annex F) is introduced to help users understand how to apply the standard effectively. It outlines principles for:

    • Referring to relevant clauses and making appropriate selections.
    • Modifying clauses where other standards better cover specific machine requirements.
    • Ensuring that such adaptations do not compromise safety levels based on risk evaluations.
  • Risk Assessment and Expertise
The amendment underlines the importance of expert judgment in interpreting the standard, performing risk assessments, and tailoring requirements for particular machines.

  • Application Options Table (Table F.1)
This table serves as a practical guide to identify which clauses require attention, selection among alternatives, additional requirements, or referencing of related standards, including ISO and IEC standards such as ISO 13850, IEC 61508, and others.

  • Integration with Related Standards
The amendment references complementary international standards related to machine safety, emergency stop principles, control system safety, electrical shock prevention, and more, ensuring harmonized safety approaches.

Applications

  • Industrial Machine Design and Manufacturing
The amendment assists machine manufacturers in developing electrical equipment that complies with international safety requirements, enhancing machine reliability and operator protection.

  • Safety Compliance and Risk Management
Engineers and safety professionals utilize the guidance for thorough electrical safety assessments, ensuring power supply, control circuits, and emergency functions meet the latest safety protocols.

  • Standards Development and Implementation
Standardization bodies and technical committees use this amendment to develop product-specific standards or adapt existing ones, ensuring consistent and effective application across various machinery types.

  • Maintenance and Operation
Applicable for maintenance personnel and operational staff, the standard ensures that electrical equipment is installed and maintained to prevent hazards such as unexpected startups, electrical shocks, or control failures.

Related Standards

This amendment emphasizes the interconnectedness of IEC 60204-1 with other prominent standards, including but not limited to:

  • ISO 13850: Safety of machinery – Emergency stop – Principles of design
  • ISO 14118: Safety of machinery – Prevention of unexpected start-up
  • ISO 14119: Safety of machinery – Interlocking devices associated with guards
  • IEC 61508: Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems
  • IEC 60364-4-41: Protection against electric shock
  • IEC 61310: Safety of machinery – Indication, marking, and actuation
  • ISO 14121: Safety of machinery – Principles for risk assessment

By aligning IEC 60204-1 Amendment 1 with these and other standards, users achieve a comprehensive framework that addresses all aspects of electrical safety and functional reliability in industrial machines.

Annexe F
(informative)

1) auxquels on se conforme, en indiquant les options applicables si nécessaire;
– l’évaluation nécessaire du risque d’une machine;

– la lecture et la compréhension de toutes les prescriptions de la CEI 60204-1;
données;

Annex F
(informative)
Guide for the use of this part of IEC 60204

F.1 General
IEC 60204-1 gives a large number of general requirements that may or may not be applicable
to the electrical equipment of a particular machine. A simple reference without any qualification
to the complete standard IEC 60204-1 is therefore not sufficient. Choices need to be made to
cover all requirements of IEC 60204-1. A technical committee preparing a product family or a
dedicated product standard (type C in CEN) and the supplier of a machine for which no product
family or dedicated product standard exists, should use this standard:
a) by reference; and
b) by selection of the most appropriate option(s) from the requirements given in the relevant
clauses; and
c) by modification of certain clauses, as necessary, where the particular requirements for the
equipment of the machine are adequately covered by other relevant standards,
providing the options selected and the modifica
