Overview
IEC 60763-1:2010 sets out the definitions, classification, and general requirements for laminated pressboard used in electrical applications. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard is a key reference for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of solid electrical insulating materials. It applies to all types of laminated pressboard, providing a basis for understanding insulation material properties, material selection, and safe application in electrical equipment.
This second edition brings IEC 60763-1 in line with IEC 60641-1:2007, ensuring harmonization within insulation standards for electrical equipment. By defining the required terminology, categorizing materials, and specifying general criteria, it supports both product quality and compatibility in the international electrical industry.
Key Topics
Definitions
IEC 60763-1 provides foundational definitions, including:
- Pressboard: Rigid board made from vegetable-origin pulp, known for its density, uniform thickness, mechanical strength, and excellent insulating properties.
- Laminated pressboard: Board constructed from multiple pressboard sheets bonded with adhesive, offering enhanced performance characteristics.
Material Classification
The standard classifies laminated pressboard into a set of types based on:
- Composition (e.g., wood pulp, cotton, blends)
- Physical and chemical properties
- Intended applications (e.g., high purity, oil absorption, machinability)
Examples of classification include types designated as LB0, LB2, LB3, LB4, LB5, and LB6, with subdivisions specifying fiber content and usage recommendations.
General Requirements
Key requirements specified by IEC 60763-1 for laminated pressboard include:
- Compliance with IEC 60641-1 for component sheets
- Standardized bonding and manufacturing processes
- Machinability appropriate to the material
- Preferred sheet thicknesses (10–50 mm) with specified tolerances
- Detailed labeling and protective packaging for transport and storage
Applications
Laminated pressboard products conforming to IEC 60763-1 are widely used in electrical and electronic sectors where solid electrical insulation is critical. Common applications include:
- Power transformers: Used for coil supports, spacers, lead exit insulation, and barriers, taking advantage of pressboard’s dielectric strength and oil compatibility.
- Motors and generators: Deployed in slot wedges, phase insulation, and structural support components.
- Switchgear and electrical equipment: Utilized as mechanical and electrical barriers due to their rigidity, machinability, and aging resistance.
- Oil-immersed equipment: Types with high oil absorption and moldability are essential for components requiring shaping and long-term exposure to insulating oils.
Selection of laminated pressboard type should always be matched to the specific performance requirements of the end-use application, considering mechanical strength, purity, aging, and processing needs.
Related Standards
Professionals working with laminated pressboard and insulating materials should also reference these related IEC standards:
- IEC 60641-1: Pressboard and presspaper for electrical purposes - Part 1: Definitions and general requirements (closely aligned with IEC 60763-1)
- IEC 60763-2 & IEC 60763-3: Additional parts covering test methods and specific requirements for laminated pressboard
- IEC 60112, IEC 60216: Standards covering thermal and electrical characteristics for insulation

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

LAMINATED PRESSBOARD FOR ELECTRICAL PURPOSES –
Part 1: Definitions, classification and general requirements
1 Scope
This part of IEC 60763 contains the definitions required for the understanding of all three
parts of IEC 60763, the classification of material into types, and the general requirements
applicable to all material covered by the standard.
Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance.
However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on
the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not
based on this specification alone.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

and general requirements
3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document the following definitions apply:
3.1
pressboard
board normally made on an intermittent board machine from pulp made entirely from
vegetable origin of high chemical purity. It is characterized by its relatively high density, even
thickness, surface smoothness, high mechanical strength, flexibility, ageing resistance and
electrical insulating properties. The surface may be smooth or textured
3.2
laminated pressboard
board built up from sheets of pressboard bonded with an adhesive
4 Classification
Based on compositions and properties, this standard covers the types of laminated
pressboard shown in Table 1. The designation of types is the same as that given in
IEC 60641-1; in addition, “L” is shown for “laminated” (for example LB0.1). To the description
of the types some examples of known applications are added without implying any restriction
on other possible applications.
