Packaging of components for automatic handling - Part 6-1: Bulk case packaging for miniaturized surface mounting components

IEC TS 60286-6-1:2023 specifies a bulk case capable of containing miniaturized surface mount components of sizes within the range of 0402M to 1005M (see Table 1 for explanation of the codes). The bulk case is designed for transport and storage of components and to supply of components directly or by an appropriate feeder to the placement machine. The bulk case is equipped with a coupling interface to enable its automatic handling, e.g. by a robot or automatic handling machines.

Overview

IEC TS 60286-6-1:2023 sets out the requirements and recommendations for bulk case packaging specifically designed for miniaturized surface mounting components (SMDs) within the size range of 0402M to 1005M. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this technical specification aims to standardize packaging solutions to enhance the transport, storage, and automated handling of electronic components used in surface-mount technology (SMT) assembly lines. The bulk case is designed to facilitate high efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with automated placement machines and robotic handling equipment, ensuring that components can be supplied directly or via appropriate feeders.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Size Compatibility

    • Defines bulk case packaging for SMDs ranging from 0402M to 1005M, covering capacitors, resistors, and similar small electronic components.
    • Ensures component protection and compatibility with existing SMT processes.
  • Design and Construction

    • The bulk case features a coupling interface such as a T-slot bar, enabling secure connection and automated handling.
    • Includes a robust shutter mechanism for controlled access and prevention of component mixing.
    • Constructed using transparent or translucent materials that minimize risks associated with electrostatic discharge.
  • Mechanical and Environmental Requirements

    • Provides mechanical stability for transport, storage, and handling, ensuring component safety.
    • Specifies performance under varying conditions, such as temperature extremes and mechanical impact, to maintain dimensional integrity and prevent damage.
  • Marking and Identification

    • Outlines requirements for peelable labels suitable for barcodes and 2D symbols, enhancing traceability throughout the supply chain.
    • Encourages use of recycling symbols according to international standards, promoting sustainability.

Applications

IEC TS 60286-6-1:2023 is highly relevant for industries and organizations involved in electronics manufacturing and automated assembly, where efficient and reliable handling of miniaturized SMDs is critical. Key applications include:

  • Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Assembly

    • Streamlines automated feeding and placement of small components, supporting high-speed, high-volume PCB assembly lines.
  • Automated Warehousing and Logistics

    • Enables safe bulk transportation and storage of SMDs with improved inventory control and minimized manual handling.
  • Traceability and Quality Assurance

    • Enhanced package labeling supports better traceability, inventory management, and quality control throughout manufacturing, shipping, and assembly.
  • Sustainability and Reusability

    • Durable case construction and the use of peelable, recyclable labels facilitate the reuse and recycling of packaging, supporting environmental responsibility.

Related Standards

Organizations implementing IEC TS 60286-6-1:2023 should be aware of several related standards that provide additional guidance on packaging, labeling, and testing:

  • IEC 60286-6 – Packaging of components for automatic handling: Bulk case packaging for surface mounting components (predecessor and broader packaging requirements)
  • IEC 62090 – Product package labels for electronic components using barcode and 2D symbologies (labeling requirements)
  • ISO 180 – Plastics: Determination of Izod impact strength (materials testing)
  • ISO 2248 – Packaging: Complete, filled transport packages – Vertical impact test by dropping (transport package testing)
  • ISO 11469 – Plastics: Generic identification and marking of plastics products (recycling marking guidelines)
  • ISO 6906 – Vernier callipers reading to 0.02 mm (dimensional measurement tools)

By closely following IEC TS 60286-6-1:2023 and these related standards, manufacturers and suppliers can achieve reliable, automated, and sustainable packaging solutions for miniaturized surface mounting components. This increases operational efficiency, enhances product quality, and ensures compliance with global electronic manufacturing best practices.
