Overview
IEC TR 62715-6-41:2025, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), presents a general introduction to mechanical test methods for rollable displays, a rapidly developing subset of flexible display technology. This standard offers an overview of rollable display technology, including their structures and potential applications in various industries, such as consumer electronics and automotive displays. It provides essential foundational information relevant for manufacturers, designers, engineers, and product developers engaged with flexible and rollable display solutions.
Rollable displays are a type of flexible display device capable of being rolled or unrolled, allowing for compact storage and extended display area upon deployment. With increasing interest since 2020, rollable displays have seen considerable advancements, leading to their showcasing at trade shows and their imminent entry into the global market. As rollable display technology evolves, IEC TR 62715-6-41:2025 serves as a vital resource for understanding fundamental concepts, classifications, and design considerations.
Key Topics
IEC TR 62715-6-41:2025 discusses several fundamental aspects of rollable display technology:
- Classification of Rollable Displays: The standard introduces various rolling types based on their rolling mechanisms and directions (e.g., in-rolling, out-rolling, one-axis, double-axis, and S-type rollable displays).
- Structure of Rollable Displays: It explains the structural elements, including multi-layer designs, spring components for retracting force, and multi-joint support mechanisms to ensure reliability and minimize stress during rolling and unrolling.
- Mechanical Considerations: The document addresses important mechanical factors such as tensile force, interlayer slippage, bending stress, and the need for precise movement and synchronization, especially in double-axis designs.
- Design Optimization: Attention is given to the optimization of stack designs and the use of finite element analysis for improving mechanical stability and rollability.
- Terminology and Definitions: Key terms such as one-axis rollable display, double-axis rollable display, in-rolling and out-rolling configurations are clearly defined.
Applications
Rollable display technology, as introduced in IEC TR 62715-6-41:2025, is paving the way for a new generation of versatile electronic devices. Applications discussed include:
- Consumer Electronics: Rollable televisions, tablets, and monitors benefit from the ability to expand screen area while maintaining compact form factors for portability and space-saving.
- Automotive Displays: Rollable displays offer innovative solutions for vehicle interiors, adaptable dashboards, and customizable information panels.
- Innovative Product Design: The flexibility and compactness of rollable displays foster creativity in product design, enabling novel applications across industries.
- Interior Design and Smart Environments: The ability to hide or reveal display surfaces on demand is valuable for smart home systems and adaptive environments.
Manufacturers and designers implementing rollable displays can utilize this standard to ensure their products leverage the advantages of flexible display technology while addressing key challenges such as mechanical reliability, stress management, and optimal user experience.
