Overview

The prEN IEC 61754-2:2025 standard, published by CLC, defines the fibre optic connector interfaces for the Type BFOC/2,5 connector family. This internationally recognized standard establishes the precise interface dimensions and specifications critical for the design, manufacturing, and interoperability of fibre optic connectors within this family.

The BFOC/2,5 connectors feature a nominal 2.5 mm ferrule diameter, a bayonet coupling nut, and a spring-loaded ferrule along the optical axis. They include a single male guide key to ensure correct orientation during connection. This standard provides technical clarity to ensure uniformity and compatibility across devices incorporating this connector type.

The document is a key reference for manufacturers, system designers, and quality assurance engineers involved in fibre optic interconnections, particularly those working with physically contacting connectors in telecommunications, data networks, and optical instrumentation.

Key Topics

  • Connector Plug Interface:
    Defines dimensions, ferrule grades, and ferrule end-face geometry for the plug. The ferrule features a spherically polished end-face for physical contact (PC) fiber connections.

  • Adaptor Interface:
    Describes resilient alignment sleeves that provide robust and precise fiber alignment between plugs. Includes dimensional specifications and performance parameters.

  • Active Device Receptacle Interface:
    Covers interfaces for devices like optical transceivers, with stringent alignment sleeve specifications to ensure high-quality optical coupling.

  • Ferrule and Alignment Sleeve Grades:
    Specifies multiple grades referencing IEC 61755-3 and IEC 63267-3 series, which address optical performance criteria such as attenuation and connector geometry.

  • Pin Gauge Specifications:
    Provides detailed pin gauge dimensions and tolerances to verify connector adaptor alignment sleeves, ensuring consistent mechanical performance.

  • Intermateability and Mechanical Features:
    Includes interface compatibility tables and mechanical characteristics such as coupling ring rotation and permitted radial float to assist in ergonomic and functional design.

Applications

  • Telecommunications Networks:
    Standardized connectors for seamless fiber optic patching in central offices and distribution frames.

  • Data Centers and Enterprise Networks:
    Ensuring reliable high-speed data transmission by using standard interfaces for switch and server connections.

  • Optical Instrumentation and Test Equipment:
    Precision connector interfaces critical for fiber optic test probes and measurement devices.

  • Active Optical Devices:
    Interfaces for optical transceivers, lasers, and photodetectors requiring accurate alignment to minimize insertion loss.

  • Fibre Optic Cabling Systems:
    Used in fiber optic jumper cables, patch cords, and adaptors designed for consistent interface mating and mechanical stability.

35 FOREWORD
36 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
37 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
38 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
39 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
40 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
41 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
42 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
43 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
44 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
45 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
46 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
47 interested IEC National Committees.
48 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
49 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
50 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
51 misinterpretation by any end user.
52 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
53 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
54 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
55 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
56 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
57 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
58 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
59 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
60 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
61 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
62 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
63 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
64 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
65 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
66 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
67 International Standard IEC 61754-2 has been prepared by subcommittee 86B: Fibre optic
68 interconnecting devices and passive components, of IEC technical committee 86: Fibre optics.
69 This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1996. This edition
70 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
71 a) Added clauses and content for Terms and definitions, Normative references, Bibliography;
72 b) Added the active device receptacle interface type;
73 c) Changed the ferrule grades to referring to the connector optical interface standard IEC
74 61755-3 series;
75 d) Changed the ferrule end face geometry to the reference to the connector optical interface
76 standard IEC 61755-3 series and IEC 63267-3 series;
77 e) Improved the description of the characteristics of the resilient alignment sleeve for adaptor
78 and rigid bore sleeve for active device receptacle;
