Overview

EN 50645:2017 sets out the ecodesign requirements for small power transformers within the European Union. Published by CENELEC (CLC), this standard specifies minimum requirements for transformers operating at 50 Hz AC, with a rated power of 1 kVA or higher and a voltage below 1 kV, in line with the EN 61558 series. It also aligns with Commission Regulation (EU) No 548/2014, which implements Directive 2009/125/EC concerning ecodesign for energy-related products. For transformers in the 1 kV to 1.1 kV range, EN 50645:2017 may be used as a guideline.

The aim is to reduce energy losses, improve product information, and support environmental protection objectives by promoting more energy-efficient designs and providing unified assessment criteria.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability

    • Applies to small power transformers (≥1 kVA, <1 kV) in the EU, except where specifically excluded by the regulation.
    • Aligns ecodesign requirements with legislative measures for energy efficiency in electrical products.
  • Technical Requirements

    • No-load loss: Limits are set for energy losses when transformers operate without load.
    • Load loss: Specifies maximum allowable energy losses under load conditions.
    • Verification Tolerance: Actual measured losses should not be more than 5% higher than the declared value for both no-load and load conditions.
    • Routine Testing: Routine production tests are required to check compliance with no-load loss requirements.
  • Marking and Documentation

    • Transformers must be clearly marked with essential values:
      • Rated power
      • Load loss and no-load loss
      • Cooling system power (if applicable)
      • Weight and type of core and conducting materials
    • Manufacturer’s name, address, and unique model identifier must be in technical documentation.
  • Conformity Assessment

    • Conformity with EN 50645:2017 provides a presumption of compliance with the relevant EU ecodesign regulations, supporting market access and regulatory acceptance.

Applications

EN 50645:2017 is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of Small Power Transformers
    • Ensures that products placed on the EU market meet harmonized energy efficiency and performance requirements.
  • Electrical System Designers and Installers
    • Enables informed choices when selecting compliant, environmentally responsible transformers for low-voltage networks and industrial, commercial, or residential settings.
  • Compliance and Certification Bodies
    • Provides a clear framework for evaluating transformer products for energy efficiency labeling, CE marking, and other conformity assessments.
  • Procurement and Project Managers
    • Facilitates purchasing decisions based on reliable, standardized energy performance and loss characteristics, supporting green procurement policies.

Adopting EN 50645:2017 results in reduced operational energy costs and aligns with sustainability objectives by lowering overall transformer losses within electrical grids and installations.

Related Standards

  • EN 61558 Series: Core reference for general requirements, safety, and tests for power transformers and similar products.
  • Commission Regulation (EU) No 548/2014: Sets EU-wide ecodesign and energy efficiency criteria for transformers.
  • Directive 2009/125/EC: Establishes the framework for setting ecodesign requirements for energy-related products across the European market.

For all stakeholders in the transformer market, compliance with EN 50645:2017 is vital for meeting legal, technical, and sustainability requirements in Europe. Using this standard ensures greater energy efficiency, environmental protection, and regulatory confidence.

static piece of apparatus with two or more windings which, by electromagnetic induction, transforms a
system of alternating voltage and current into another system of voltage and current usually of
different values and at the same frequency for the purpose of transmitting electrical power
[SOURCE: IEV 421-01-01]

Note 1 to entry: The short-circuit voltage is usually expressed as a percentage of the rated supply
voltage.
3.3
rated output current
output current at rated supply voltage, rated supply frequency and rated output voltage, at rated power
factor, assigned to the transformer by the manufacturer for the specified operating conditions of the
transformer

rated supply voltage
supply voltage (for polyphase supply, the phase-to-phase voltage) assigned to the transformer by the
manufacturer for the specified operating conditions
