Overview
EN 60794-3-30:2008 is a European Standard developed by CLC, based on the international IEC 60794-3-30:2008. It specifies family requirements for optical fibre telecommunication cables intended for outdoor applications, notably those deployed as underwater cables in lakes, river crossings, and coastal environments. Aligning with IEC 60794-3, this standard details the essential properties and minimum requirements that ensure cable performance and durability in challenging aquatic and near-shore settings. The key updates in this edition include the explicit inclusion of coastal applications, an expanded range of fibre types (including B5 fibres), and additional requirements according to the MICE (Mechanical, Ingress, Climatic and Chemical, Electromagnetic) classification.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
- Covers optical fibre cables for installation in lakes, river crossings, and coastal areas.
- Applies to both duct, buried, aerial, and direct underwater installations.
- Establishes baseline mechanical, environmental, and optical performance criteria.
Optical Fibre Types
- Recognises single-mode and non-zero dispersion shifted fibres (such as B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, B2, B4, and the newly added B5).
- Specifies attenuation, cut-off wavelength, and polarization mode dispersion as per IEC 60793 standards.
Mechanical and Environmental Testing
- Details laboratory test conditions for tensile strength, bending, impact, torsion, crushing, temperature cycling, hydrostatic pressure, and coiling performance.
- Acceptance criteria are based on changes in attenuation and visual inspection for physical damage.
Cable Construction Requirements
- Describes elements such as loose tube, slotted core, tight buffer, central strength member, moisture barriers, armour, and outer sheath.
- Requires adherence to specific marking and identification protocols.
Annexes and MICE Table
- Annex A provides a template for detailed cable specifications.
- Annex C incorporates additional requirements for industrial settings based on ISO/IEC 24702 (MICE classification), addressing environments with varying mechanical, ingress, climatic, and electromagnetic stresses.
Applications
EN 60794-3-30:2008 is practically applied in the design, specification, procurement, and deployment of optical fibre cables where underwater or coastal resilience is critical. Typical use cases include:
Telecommunication Links Across Bodies of Water:
Installation of fibre-optic communications infrastructure across lakes, rivers, and along coastal regions, ensuring both bandwidth and reliability.Submerged and Coastal Infrastructure:
Deployment in utility networks, sensor systems, or surveillance around aquatic environments where mechanical robustness and chemical resistance are paramount.Industrial Installations:
Application in ports, harbours, and industrial areas subject to harsh conditions, as covered by the MICE classification, such as factories near water bodies.Replacement or Upgrade Projects:
Used as a specification reference in refurbishment of existing underwater or near-shore cable routes to ensure compliancy with updated standards.
By complying with EN 60794-3-30:2008, manufacturers and network operators can assure their submarine and coastal cable installations meet harmonised European requirements for performance, safety, and operational longevity.

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC

OPTICAL FIBRE CABLES –
Part 3-30: Outdoor cables –
Family specification for optical telecommunication
cables for lakes, river crossings and coastal application
1 Scope
This family specification covers optical telecommunication cables to be used as underwater
cables for lakes, river crossings and coastal applications. Requirements of the sectional
specification IEC 60794-3 for duct, buried, aerial and lake, river crossings and coastal
applications cables are applicable to cables covered by this standard. This standard does not
cover methods of cable repair nor repair capability, nor does it cover cables for use with lake,
river crossings and coastal applications line amplifiers.
Clause 4 of this standard describes a blank detail specification for optical telecommunication
cables to be used for lakes, river crossings and coastal applications. It incorporates some
minimum requirements.
Annex A describes a blank detail specification which may be used to prepare detail
specifications.
Annex B describes the cable construction.
Annex C describes a blank detail specification for ISO/IEC 24702 applications (MICE).
The parameters specified in this standard may be affected by measurement uncertainty
arising either from measurement errors or calibration errors due to lack of suitable standards.
Acceptance criteria are interpreted with respect to this consideration (see IEC 60794-3,
Clause 9).
The number of fibres tested should be representative of the cable design and should be
agreed between the customer and the supplier.
