Overview
EN 50407-1:2004 - Multi-pair cables used in high bit rate digital access telecommunication networks - Part 1: Outdoor cables - is a European (CENELEC/CLC) standard that defines requirements and test methods for outdoor, water‑tight, screened multi‑pair cables intended for high bit‑rate digital access applications up to 10 MHz. It specifies mechanical, electrical and transmission performance characteristics, component materials and construction for cables used in outdoor networks (for example the subscriber access loop).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & application: Water‑tight outdoor multi‑pair cables with an overall screen for high bit rate digital access (up to 10 MHz). Cable sizes range from 1 up to 600 pairs.
- Conductor: Annealed copper, solid circular conductors (IEC 60028); diameter typically 0.4–0.8 mm; mechanical elongation ≥ 15%; conductor resistance and unbalance requirements (unbalance ≤ 2%).
- Insulation: Solid, cellular or composite polyolefin; minimum thickness measured per EN 60811‑1‑1; easy stripping; colour coding per HD 402 or customer agreement; insulation shrinkage < 5%.
- Screening & core design: Overall cable core screen options (aluminium tape laminated to plastic, optionally with drain wire) and optional element/unit screens to improve electromagnetic immunity and EMC.
- Water protection: Continuous filling compound meeting EN 50290‑2‑28, or water‑swellable elements/powders where continuous filling is not used.
- Finished cable tests and electrical parameters: Defined test methods and acceptance criteria for dielectric strength (1 kV d.c. or 700 V a.c. for 2 s), insulation resistance (≥ 5 000 MΩ·km at 500 V d.c.), attenuation, mutual capacitance, capacitance unbalance, velocity of propagation, Near End Crosstalk (NEXT), ELFEXT, Longitudinal Conversion Loss (LCL), characteristic impedance, transfer impedance and other transmission parameters (see EN 50407‑1 test clauses).
- Mechanical & environmental: Bending, impact, crush resistance, temperature range, cold bend, fauna/mould proofing, armour and sheath requirements, and cable identification.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Primary uses: Outdoor subscriber access loops, feeder lines and other outdoor segments of DSL/ISDN/HDSL/ADSL/VDSL and other XDSL deployments where frequencies up to 10 MHz are required.
- Intended users:
- Cable manufacturers (design, production and QA)
- Telecom network designers and operators procuring outdoor screened multi‑pair cables
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors applying referenced test methods
- Procurement/specification engineers and regulators ensuring interoperability and EMC performance
Related standards
- Test and material references: EN 50289 series, EN 50290 series, EN 60811 series, HD 402 (insulation colours), IEC 60028 (copper resistance).
- EN 50407‑1 should be used together with these normative references for complete product specification and qualification.
EN 50407‑1:2004 is a practical, manufacturer‑oriented standard ensuring outdoor multi‑pair cables meet mechanical durability, water protection and electromagnetic performance requirements for reliable high bit‑rate digital access in outdoor networks.
