IEC 60317-44:1997 specifies the requirements of tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire of class 240. The insulation consists of one or two wrappings of aromatic polyimide tape. Class 240 is a thermal class that requires a temperature index of 240 and a heat shock temperature of at least 260 °C. NOTE In some countries, e.g. Canada, Russia, USA, this product is assigned a class 220. The tape is coated on one or both sides with a suitable adhesive, for instance, fluorinated ethylene propylene. After wrapping, the tape is heat-sealed to form a continuous and adherent sheath. Specific requirements may be subject to contract. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which the wire is recommended to be used and this will depend on many factors, including the types of equipment involved. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: – width: min. 2,00 mm, max. 16,00 mm; – thickness: min. 0,80 mm, max. 5,60 mm. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified ratio width/thickness are given in IEC 60317-0-2. Exemple: IEC 60317 44 4,00 mm x 1,00 mm grade A2

Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 44: Aromatic polyimide tape wrapped rectangular copper wire, class 240

- širina: najmanj 2,00 mm, največ 16,00 mm;
- debelina: najmanj 0,80 mm, največ 5,60 mm.
Določene kombinacije širine in debeline ter opredeljeno razmerje
širina/debelina so navedeni v IEC 317-0-2.
- sklic na IEC 60317-44;
- dimenzije nominalnega prevodnika (širina x debelina);
- stopnja.
Primer: 60317-44 IEC 4,00 mm x 1,00 mm razred A2.

Overview

EN 60317-44:1997 (identical to IEC 60317-44:1997) specifies requirements for aromatic polyimide tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire of class 240. This standard, published by the CLC, defines the necessary properties and test methods for insulated copper wire used in electrical windings with a high thermal performance. The insulation system consists of one or two layers of aromatic polyimide tape, heat-sealed to form a continuous and adherent sheath, providing exceptional thermal and electrical reliability.

Key Topics

  • Thermal Performance (Class 240)
    The wire must have a temperature index of 240 and withstand a minimum heat shock temperature of 260°C. In some countries, such as the USA, Canada, and Russia, this wire is classified as Class 220.

  • Dimensions
    Covered conductor dimensions:

    • Width: 2.00 mm to 16.00 mm
    • Thickness: 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm
      Specified combinations and ratios are referenced from IEC 60317-0-2.
  • Insulation System

    • Aromatic polyimide tape (single or double layer)
    • Tape may be adhesive-coated on one or both sides
    • Adhesive often uses fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP)
    • Heat sealing processes ensure a robust and continuous sheath
  • Electrical and Mechanical Properties

    • Adherence and flexibility after winding and stretching
    • Electrical resistance measured at 20°C
    • Minimum elongation and limited springback
    • Minimum breakdown voltage thresholds based on tape type and grade
  • Testing and Quality

    • Methods for testing properties are specified in IEC 851
    • All tests use standardized temperature and humidity conditions
    • Specific tests for breakdown voltage, elongation, springiness, adhesion, and heat shock

Applications

EN 60317-44:1997 applies to environments where high-performance winding wires are critical. Typical applications include:

  • Electric motors and generators
    Providing reliable insulation for coils exposed to high operating temperatures and demanding mechanical stresses.

  • Transformers
    Ensuring long service life and energy efficiency with robust heat and voltage resistance.

  • Specialist electrical equipment
    Used in aerospace, industrial, and automotive sectors for devices requiring superior insulation and thermal stability.

  • Custom coil windings
    Suited for situations where rectangular copper wire geometry and high thermal class are essential for performance and compact design.

Adherence to this standard assures that winding wires perform consistently in high-temperature applications, supporting equipment reliability and safety.

Related Standards

For a complete understanding and implementation in the field of winding wires and coils insulation, the following standards should also be considered:

  • IEC 60317-0-2: General requirements for enamelled rectangular copper wire
