Overview
EN 50216-5:2002/A3:2006 (CLC / CENELEC) is an amendment to the European standard for power transformer and reactor fittings, Part 5: Liquid level, pressure and flow indicators, pressure relief devices and dehydrating breathers. Approved 2006-09-01, this amendment supersedes EN 50216-5:2002/A1:2002 and updates technical requirements, tests and dimensional guidance to ensure interchangeability and reliable performance of transformer fittings.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Covers design and specification requirements for fittings used on liquid-filled power transformers and reactors, specifically:
- Liquid level indicators
- Pressure indicators
- Flow indicators
- Pressure relief devices (safety valves)
- Dehydrating breathers (silica-gel breathers)
- Electrical contact performance (NO and NC):
- 24 V d.c. to 220 V d.c.: uninterrupted current 2 A; interrupted (breaking) current 100 mA with L/R < 40 ms
- 230 V a.c.: 2 A uninterrupted and 2 A interrupted (cos φ > 0.5)
- Minimum contact life: 1 000 operations
- For 24 V d.c. systems with making capacity up to 0.5 VA, switches must be able to make low current down to 10 mA after one year of non-operation
- Testing:
- Type test: verify correct operating pressure value under oil overpressure (detailed procedures are under consideration)
- Routine tests: operational tests with compressed air per clause 6.4 to check operation at set pressure, optical signals and electric contacts (for devices from specified figures); optional leakage test can be agreed between purchaser and supplier
- Dehydrating breathers:
- Defines overall dimensions and pipe connections to guarantee interchangeability of conventional breathers with equivalent dehydrating characteristics
- Excludes self-regenerating breathers
- Typical size classes (Table 8) and guidance: for shorter maintenance cycles, half the suggested silica-gel quantity may be used
- Flange and mounting updates: modified Figures 4–7 and addition of Figure 8 (small 2H flange) for breathers up to 1 kg silica-gel capacity
Applications and users
- Primary users: transformer and reactor manufacturers, electrical OEMs, utilities, maintenance contractors, procurement/specification engineers and testing laboratories
- Practical uses:
- Specifying compliant fittings for new transformer designs
- Interchangeability and spare-part selection for site maintenance
- Defining acceptance and routine test procedures for factory and on-site commissioning
- Ensuring safety via standardized pressure relief and breather interfaces
