Overview
EN ISO 8666:2020/A11:2021 - Small Craft – Principal Data is a European Standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This amendment (A11) updates the original ISO 8666:2020, establishing a harmonized method for identifying and specifying the principal data of small craft, including main dimensions, mass, and loading conditions. By providing standardized definitions and measurement methodologies, EN ISO 8666:2020/A11:2021 supports boat manufacturers, designers, and regulatory bodies in ensuring clarity, safety, and compliance within the marine industry.
Key Topics
- Standardized Terminology: The standard defines key terms used in describing small craft such as hull length, beam, maximum load, displacement, and more.
- Principal Dimensions: It outlines how the main dimensions of a craft are to be measured and reported, ensuring consistency across the industry.
- Mass and Load Specifications: EN ISO 8666 provides the method for specifying weights, loading conditions, and the manufacturer's recommended maximum load.
- Regulatory Compliance: The amendment aligns with EU Directive 2013/53/EU, facilitating conformity assessment for essential requirements related to safety, stability, buoyancy, and structural integrity.
- Owner’s Manual Guidance: Definitions and data required for owner’s manuals are established, supporting clear information communication to end-users.
- Applicability Across Europe: This standard is adopted by all CEN member countries, fostering a single reference for small craft specifications throughout the European market.
Applications
EN ISO 8666:2020/A11:2021 finds practical application in several areas of the boating and marine industry:
- Small Craft Manufacturing: Boat builders use this standard to measure and document principal craft data, ensuring product compliance and marketability within the EU and EFTA countries.
- Design and Engineering: Naval architects and marine designers rely on the standardized definitions of dimensions and loading to design boats that meet safety, performance, and legislative requirements.
- Certification and Inspection: Regulatory authorities and third-party assessors use the methods and terms outlined in this standard to evaluate boats for compliance with EU directives and national regulations.
- Owner Information: Provision of accurate principal data ensures owners and operators are informed about their vessel’s capabilities and limitations, supporting safe operation on the water.
- Documentation and Marketing: Consistent and recognized specifications allow manufacturers to market and compare products effectively across the European and international boating industries.
Related Standards
- ISO 8666:2020: The international version, forming the basis for principal data definitions for small crafts.
- EN ISO 12215 Series: Standards covering hull construction and scantlings for small boats.
- ISO 10087: Identification coding for small craft.
- Directive 2013/53/EU: EU legislation on the safety and construction of recreational craft and personal watercraft, closely linked to the application of EN ISO 8666.
- EN ISO 10240: Requirements for owner’s manuals on small craft.
EN ISO 8666:2020/A11:2021 is an essential tool for anyone involved in the design, construction, certification, or ownership of small craft, providing the foundation for a harmonized European marine industry and supporting regulatory compliance, safety, and performance.
