Overview
EN 3365:2025 is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) within the aerospace series. This standard specifies the requirements for steel X15CrNi17-3 (material number 1.4057) - an austenitic-martensitic stainless steel. The scope includes air melted, softened, forging stock material for aerospace applications, with cross-section or diameter (a or D) not exceeding 300 mm. The standard ensures consistent quality and performance of these forgings, supporting their safe and reliable use in aerospace manufacturing.
Key Topics
- Material Specification: EN 3365:2025 covers steel X15CrNi17-3, also designated ASD-STAN FE-PM3901, primarily intended for aerospace components requiring excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
- Melting and Delivery Condition: The steel must be air melted and supplied in a softened condition, which facilitates subsequent processing such as forging and heat treatment.
- Dimension Limits: The standard applies to forging stocks where the shortest cross-sectional dimension or diameter is 300 mm or less.
- Test Methods and Quality Control: It references EN 4700-005 for technical product specifications and includes requirements for ultrasonic and visual inspection, as well as limits on imperfection and inclusion content.
- Traceability and Consistency: The standard enforces marking, dimensional inspection, and delivery condition controls for robust traceability.
Applications
EN 3365:2025 is primarily used within the aerospace industry for the production of forged components such as:
- Aircraft structural parts
- Engine parts
- Landing gear components
- High-strength fasteners
The use of air melted, softened X15CrNi17-3 forging stock provides:
- Consistent quality for safety-critical aerospace parts
- Improved machinability during component manufacturing
- Excellent mechanical strength and good corrosion resistance suitable for demanding environments
Selecting materials that comply with EN 3365:2025 ensures alignment with recognized European aerospace quality standards, aids in supplier qualification, and supports international trade within the sector.
Related Standards
Organizations and engineers working to EN 3365:2025 may also reference related standards for broader compliance and process integration:
- EN 2043 - General requirements for qualification of metallic semi-finished products in aerospace applications.
- EN 4050-1 - Test method for ultrasonic inspection of metallic bars, plates, forging stock, and forgings.
- EN 4700-005 - Technical specification for steel and heat resisting alloys, specifically regarding wrought products and forging stocks.
- EN 4258 - General organization of metallic material standards and the links between different types of European standards for aerospace.
Practical Value
Adoption of EN 3365:2025 supports:
- Supplier consistency: Clear requirements for forging stock reduce variability between suppliers
- Safety assurance: Rigorous testing methods and material requirements help prevent in-service failures
- Regulatory compliance: Meeting CEN aerospace material standards is essential for certifications and quality management audits
- Competitive edge: Allows manufacturers to supply the European and global aerospace markets with certified, high-quality forging materials
By using EN 3365:2025-compliant steel forging stock, aerospace manufacturers and suppliers demonstrate commitment to quality, reliability, and industry best practices in their products and processes.
