Overview

EN ISO 16137:2006/A1:2019 is a European and international standard amendment addressing industrial check valves made from thermoplastics. Developed by CEN in collaboration with ISO, this amendment introduces updates and clarifications to the original EN ISO 16137:2006 standard, focusing on check valves for fluid transport systems. Key topics include the dimensional ranges for nominal sizes (DN), pressure classes (PN and Class), material specifications, testing requirements, and updated normative references. The standard also aligns check valve requirements with EU regulations, notably the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU.

Key Topics

  • Dimensional Ranges: The amendment specifies that thermoplastic check valves are covered in sizes from DN 8 up to DN 600, and for pressure ratings PN 6, PN 10, PN 16, PN 25, Class 150, and Class 300. Manufacturers may declare other DN/PN configurations as needed.
  • Material Requirements: Valve body and bonnet/cover materials must comply with established ISO standards for thermoplastics, including ABS, PE, PP, PVC-C, PVC-U, and PVDF.
  • Design and Performance:
    • Design Strength: Valve bodies are required to pass pressure and long-term performance tests as defined in ISO standards.
    • Leaktightness: Seat and shell leaktightness must be tested and verified, with maximum leakage rates defined according to EN 12266-1.
    • Face-to-Face Dimensions: Valves for flanged pipe systems must follow EN 558 for face-to-face dimensions; other end types are subject to manufacturer specification.
  • Testing Methods: The standard mandates specific testing procedures for both raw materials and completed valves, referencing ISO 1167-1 for internal pressure resistance and long-term behavior.
  • Terminology Updates: Reference databases from ISO and IEC are included to support clear, harmonized terminology across applications.
  • Compliance with EU Directives: The document provides a pathway for manufacturers to demonstrate conformance with the essential requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU.

Applications

EN ISO 16137:2006/A1:2019 is essential for a wide range of industrial sectors where safe and reliable control of backflow in piping systems is critical. Typical applications include:

  • Chemical Processing: For transport of corrosive and non-corrosive fluids using thermoplastic piping systems.
  • Water Treatment Facilities: Ensuring safe backflow prevention in both potable and non-potable water systems.
  • Industrial Fluid Handling: Applicable to industries using process water, wastewater, and specialized industrial fluids.
  • Pharmaceutical and Food Industries: When non-metallic materials are required to maintain product purity and resist aggressive media.

The standard helps engineers, quality managers, and manufacturers achieve compliance, reduce the risk of equipment failure, and demonstrate conformity with European regulations and market expectations.

Related Standards

To ensure comprehensive compliance and performance for thermoplastic check valves, the following standards are particularly relevant:

  • EN ISO 16137:2006 - Original version of the standard for thermoplastic check valves.
  • EN 558 - Standard for face-to-face and center-to-face dimensions for industrial valves.
  • EN 12266-1 - Industrial valves: Pressure testing methods and acceptance criteria.
  • ISO 1167-1 - Testing methods for the resistance of thermoplastic pipes and fittings to internal pressure.
  • ISO 15493 & ISO 15494 - Specifications for ABS, PVC-U, PVC-C, PB, PE, PE-RT, PE-X, and PP industrial piping systems.
  • ISO 9393-2 - Pressure testing and long-term behavior requirements for plastic valves.
  • EN 736 Series - Terminology and definitions relevant to valves.
  • Directive 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive) - Mandatory compliance for pressure equipment in the EU.

Staying updated with these standards ensures that manufacturers and users both meet regulatory demands and benefit from state-of-the-art industrial valve design and testing practices.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
