Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part E08: Colour fastness to hot water (ISO 105-E08:1994)
A specimen of the textile (textiles of all kinds and in all forms) in contact with adjacent fabrics is rolled around a glass rod, treated with slightly acidified hot water and dried. The change in colour of each specimen and the staining of the adjacent fabrics are assessed with the grey scales. The method is mainly applicable to wool and textiles containing wool.

Overview
EN ISO 105-E08:1996 specifies a standardized test method for evaluating the colour fastness of textiles when subjected to hot water. Developed collaboratively by CEN and ISO, this standard applies to all types and forms of textiles, with primary focus on wool and wool-containing fabrics. The procedure involves exposing textile samples, in contact with adjacent fabrics, to slightly acidified hot water, followed by assessment of any colour change and staining using grey scales. This standardized method is crucial for manufacturers and quality control laboratories involved in textile production and testing.
Key Topics
- Testing Methodology: The standard details how textile specimens are to be prepared, exposed to hot water, and subsequently evaluated. All forms of textiles-including fabric, yarn, and loose fibers-can be tested following these guidelines.
- Assessment Tools: Colour change in the test specimen and staining of the adjacent fabrics are assessed using standardized grey scales, ensuring objective and consistent results.
- Specimen Preparation: Special attention is given to securing textile samples between adjacent fabrics (such as wool and cotton), rolling them around a glass rod, and ensuring they are properly exposed to hot water at a controlled temperature.
- Applicability: While applicable to all textiles, the standard is especially relevant for wool and wool blends, as these materials can be particularly sensitive to hot water exposure.
- Reporting Requirements: The results must include detailed identification of the tested sample and numerical ratings for both colour change and staining, providing traceable and comparable data for quality assurance.
Applications
- Textile Manufacturing: Textile producers use EN ISO 105-E08:1996 to evaluate the durability of dyeing processes and ensure products meet required colour fastness standards before reaching the market.
- Quality Assurance: Laboratories and quality control departments employ this method as part of routine testing, especially for wool fabrics, to guarantee performance in real-life washing or processing situations.
- Product Development: Designers and manufacturers use test results to select dyes, treatments, and fibre blends that balance aesthetics with durability, enhancing product reliability.
- Compliance and Certification: Meeting this standard is often a prerequisite for compliance with international textile regulations, supporting global trade and consumer confidence.
Related Standards
- ISO 105-A01: General principles of testing for textile colour fastness, providing foundational guidelines for all related tests.
- ISO 105-A02: Grey scale for assessing change in colour, referenced for objective evaluation during the hot water test.
- ISO 105-A03: Grey scale for assessing staining, ensuring consistency in determining transfer of dye to adjacent fabrics.
- ISO 105-F: Standard adjacent fabrics required for conducting various colour fastness tests, including wool and cotton fabrics used in EN ISO 105-E08.
By following EN ISO 105-E08:1996, textile industry professionals ensure rigorous assessment of colour fastness to hot water. This standard supports reliable comparisons, enhances product quality, and facilitates compliance with international best practices in textile testing.

EN ISO 105-E08:1996 is a standard published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Its full title is "Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part E08: Colour fastness to hot water (ISO 105-E08:1994)". This standard covers: A specimen of the textile (textiles of all kinds and in all forms) in contact with adjacent fabrics is rolled around a glass rod, treated with slightly acidified hot water and dried. The change in colour of each specimen and the staining of the adjacent fabrics are assessed with the grey scales. The method is mainly applicable to wool and textiles containing wool.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 105-EO8 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 1, Tests for coloured textiles and
coloran ts.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition
(ISO 105-E08:1987), of which it constitutes a technical revision.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “Parts ”, each designated by
a letter (e.g. “Part A ”), with publication dates between 1978 and 1985.
Esch part contained a series of “sections ”, each designated by the re-
spective part letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section AO1 “).
These sections are now being republished as separate documents, them-
selves designated “Parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric desig-
nations. A complete list of these Parts is given in ISO 105-AOl .
