Railway applications - Braking - Distributor valves and distributor-isolating devices
This European Standard applies to distributor valves and distributor-isolating devices.
The distributor valves contained in this European Standard are of graduated release type. Direct release types are not included.
Functionally they are regarded as not containing relay valves of any type, even if the relay valves are physically an integral part of the distributor valves.
This European Standard applies to both distributor-isolating devices mounted separate from the distributor valve and distributor-isolating devices integral with the distributor valve.
This European Standard specifies the requirements for the design, testing and quality assurance of distributor valves and distributor-isolating devices.
For interoperable freight wagons, these devices which are operated by compressed air according to EN 14198 are assessed according to the respective technical specification of interoperability.

Overview
EN 15355:2008/FprA1 is a European Standard developed by CEN under the scope of railway applications, specifically focusing on braking systems for rolling stock. It details the requirements for distributor valves and distributor-isolating devices, which are essential components within railway brake systems. The standard applies to graduated release type distributor valves and their associated isolating devices, whether these devices are constructed as part of the valve or installed separately. It specifies the design, testing, and quality assurance criteria needed for these components to ensure safe and reliable operation in railway environments.
As part of railway engineering standards (ICS 45.060.01), this standard supports compliance with EU interoperability directives, particularly Directive 2008/57/EC, by providing harmonized measures for conformity.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
- Applies to graduated release distributor valves
- Covers both integral and separate distributor-isolating devices
- Excludes direct release type valves and devices with relay valves (even if physically present)
Design and Testing Requirements
- Outlines functional and technical requirements for components
- Specifies methods for quality assurance and compliance
- Addresses both standalone and integrated device testing
Interoperability and Compliance
- Supports essential requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC on railway system interoperability
- Offers guidelines for assessment and conformity in interoperable freight wagons, especially those using compressed air systems as referenced in EN 14198
Relationship with Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs)
- Establishes links with TSI requirements for high-speed and conventional rolling stock
- Provides routes to presumption of conformity with relevant EU regulations for railway vehicles
Applications
Rolling Stock Manufacturing
- Used by manufacturers in the design and production of distributor valves and isolating devices for passenger, freight, and locomotive rolling stock
- Supports reliable brake system performance across different vehicle types
Testing and Certification Organizations
- Provides clear guidelines for third-party testing, certification, and conformity assessment for railway brake systems
