Overview
EN 15542:2026 is the European Standard developed by CEN that defines the requirements and test methods for factory-applied external cement mortar coatings used on ductile iron pipes, fittings, and accessories. These coatings are intended for external corrosion protection of ductile iron pipes conforming to EN 545 (water pipelines), EN 598 (sewerage), and EN 969 (gas pipelines), ensuring performance at operating temperatures up to 50 °C. The standard covers coatings suitable for all common soil corrosion loads and trenchless installation methods, providing robust protection in challenging environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose:
EN 15542:2026 establishes a harmonized approach to the external cement mortar coating of ductile iron pipes, ensuring reliable corrosion protection for pipes used in water, wastewater, and gas infrastructure.Coating System:
The external cement mortar coating typically consists of:- A zinc or zinc alloy layer for basic corrosion protection
- A cement mortar layer, possibly reinforced with fibers and additives
- Optional intermediate layers such as primers, finishing resins, pigments, and surface tissue
Technical and Performance Requirements:
- Minimum and average coating thickness of the cement mortar layer
- Adhesion, impact resistance, and specific pore transition resistance of coatings
- Raw material specifications for cement, aggregates, and fibers according to relevant European standards
- Quality assurance and process control requirements for manufacturers
Testing Methodologies:
- Routine factory tests for coating thickness, appearance, pipe marking, and repair quality
- Performance tests for adhesion, impact resistance, and constituent conformity
- Reference to established methods (e.g., EN ISO 4624 for adhesion and EN ISO 527 for fiber strength)
Quality Management:
Emphasizes quality assessment systems, with reference to EN ISO 9001, for ongoing process control and verification.
Applications
Water Pipelines:
Cement mortar-coated ductile iron pipes are widely used in potable water transmission and distribution systems, offering long-term corrosion protection even in aggressive soils.Sewerage and Wastewater Systems:
The robust coating system provides durability in harsh chemical environments, making it suitable for sewer and drainage infrastructure.Gas Pipelines:
Compliance with EN 969 ensures that pipelines carrying gaseous fuels are protected from external corrosion.Trenchless Installations:
The mechanical stability and field-proven resistance of cement mortar coatings make these pipes a preferred solution for trenchless laying techniques, reducing installation costs and environmental impact.General Civil Engineering:
Used in various buried utility applications where ductile iron pipes require enhanced protection against soil-induced corrosion.
