Aerospace series - Nuts, anchor, self locking, two lug, floating with counterbore - Classification: 1 100 MPa/235 °C

This standard specifies the characteristics of two lug, counterbored, floating anchor nuts, with a self-locking feature achieved by forming the upper portion out-of-round, the dimensions of which are in conformity with ISO 3209.
These nuts are intended for use in aircraft assemblies, in which the fasteners are mainly subjected to shear loads. The counterbore of nuts with thread diameter equal to or greater than 4 mm is deep enough to accommodate a bolt shank in excess of assembly thickness, as well as the incomplete threads.
The 3 mm diameter nut has no counterbore.
They are intended to be used with threaded parts of 1 100 MPa  ) tensile strength classification.
The cadmium plating restricts the application to temperatures not exceeding 235 °C.

Overview

EN 2754:2006 specifies requirements for aerospace two-lug, floating anchor nuts with a counterbore and a self‑locking feature. These anchor nuts (two lug, floating, self‑locking) are dimensionally compliant with ISO 3209 and are classified for use with threaded parts of 1100 MPa tensile strength. The standard limits cadmium‑plated applications to temperatures not exceeding 235 °C.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Configuration and dimensions: Geometry and tolerances conform to ISO 3209; specific dimension tables cover MJ thread sizes (e.g., MJ 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10).
  • Self‑locking feature: Achieved by forming the upper portion out‑of‑round in the designated zone (as specified in the figure), providing prevailing torque without separate inserts.
  • Counterbore details: Nuts with thread diameter ≥ 4 mm have a counterbore deep enough to accommodate bolt shank and incomplete threads; the MJ 3 nut has no counterbore.
  • Materials: Steel per EN 2542 or EN 2543.
  • Surface treatment: Cadmium plating per EN 2133 with a minimum 5 µm deposit on threads and all areas contactable by a 20 mm ball; continuous deposit elsewhere. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) lubrication per EN 2491 is mandatory on threads, optional elsewhere. Cadmium limits service temperature to ≤ 235 °C.
  • Form and position tolerances: In accordance with ISO 8788.
  • Threads and related specs: Use MJ thread requirements from ISO 5855 (Parts 1 & 2) and procurement/specification guidance from ISO 5858 where applicable.
  • Marking and designation: Marking per EN 2424 (Style F). Example designation: “NUT, ANCHOR - EN2754–060” with optional hole codes for plain or dimpled rivet holes.
  • Inspection & QA: Dimensions and surface roughness apply before plating/lubrication; quality assurance references EN 9100 and ISO 5858 for procurement criteria.

Applications - who uses this standard

  • Aerospace fastener manufacturers specifying and producing floating anchor nuts for aircraft structures.
  • Design and structural engineers selecting nuts for assemblies primarily subjected to shear loads.
  • Procurement, quality assurance, and maintenance teams ensuring interchangeability, traceability and compliance with aerospace material and plating requirements.
