Overview
FprEN 15767-3 is a draft European Standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) that focuses on portable monitors and associated foam devices for firefighting support operations. This standard serves as Part 3 in the EN 15767 series and builds upon general requirements established in EN 15767-1.
The scope of FprEN 15767-3 includes requirements for devices designed to aspirate air and project low expansion foam, as well as devices capable of inducting foam concentrate. It sets out criteria for safety, performance, classification, and designation of firefighting foam devices, providing test methods, instructions for use and maintenance, and marking guidelines. This standard is applicable solely to devices manufactured after its official date of publication, ensuring the up-to-date quality and safety of modern portable firefighting equipment.
Key Topics
- Foam Device Types: FprEN 15767-3 covers several device categories, including foam nozzles, foam tubes, self-inducting nozzles, and foam attachments. Each type features distinct operating and handling requirements.
- Mechanical and Hydraulic Requirements:
- Maximum device mass according to flowrate
- Ergonomic design for safe and easy operation, even when wearing firefighter gloves
- Clearly marked flow adjustment and jet positions for accuracy in firefighting operations
- Material selection to ensure resistance to heat and frost
- Defined pressures (reference and nominal) for all performance tests
- Performance Testing:
- Accurate measurement of flowrates and effective throw
- Minimal allowable deviation in performance metrics
- Heat and frost resistance testing to guarantee operability under extreme conditions
- Spray angle requirements for self-inducting nozzles
- User Information and Documentation:
- Comprehensive instruction and maintenance handbooks required with each device
- Clearly defined marking obligations, including manufacturer information, serial numbers, key technical specifications, and flow/jet settings
- Acceptance and Quality Assurance:
- Guidelines for acceptance testing at delivery, including document checks, functional tests, and verification against standard specifications
Applications
FprEN 15767-3 is essential for organizations and professionals involved in firefighting operations that rely on portable foam devices. Key sectors and uses include:
- Municipal Fire Brigades: Ensures that portable foam devices used in local firefighting are reliable, safe, and meet uniform performance benchmarks.
- Industrial Firefighting Units: Supports safety in facilities handling flammable liquids, where quick response with foam equipment is critical.
- Manufacturers and Suppliers: Provides a clear framework for product development, quality control, and compliance documentation.
- Testing and Certification Bodies: Establishes standardized methods for performance evaluation and product certification.
- Procurement and Maintenance Teams: Assists in making informed decisions regarding selection, acceptance, maintenance, and replacement of firefighting foam devices.
Related Standards
FprEN 15767-3 references and complements other international and European standards, including:
- EN 15767-1: General requirements for portable monitor assemblies in firefighting equipment.
