Overview
FprEN 15146: Solid Softwood Panelling and Cladding – Machined Profiles Without Tongue and Groove is a CEN draft European Standard that specifies the characteristics and requirements for solid softwood panelling and cladding produced without tongue and groove profiles. These products are intended for both interior and exterior applications and can include treated, untreated, surface-treated, thermally or chemically modified, as well as finger jointed solid wood elements. The standard is key in supporting quality, safety, and harmonization within the timber and construction sector across Europe.
The standard applies strictly to machined softwood products, focusing on their physical and mechanical characteristics, appearance grading, allowable tolerances, and required product marking. It does not specify details or processes for treatment, surface coating, or wood modification.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
Covers solid softwood elements for panelling and cladding, without tongue and groove, produced from gymnosperm tree species.Product Types
Includes treated, untreated, surface-treated, thermally or chemically modified wood, and finger jointed elements.Grading and Quality Classes
Defines grading requirements (e.g., Grade A, Grade B, specific for maritime pine), including the characteristics allowed for knots, resin pockets, fissures, pith, discolouration, and more.Dimensional Specifications
- Minimum thickness and width tolerances
- Length tolerances and delivery increments
- Profiles: Only general shape and tolerances; visual examples provided
Moisture Content
- Specified ranges for internal and external use
- Measurement methods according to European standards
Marking and Identification
- Essential product and specification information required on labeling or accompanying documentation
Exemptions and Related Regulation
- Processes for treatment and surface modification not detailed
- For additional regulatory needs (durability, reaction to fire, hazardous substances, and CE marking), EN 14915 applies
Applications
Solid softwood panelling and cladding products governed by FprEN 15146 are widely used in construction and architectural applications, including:
- Wall and ceiling panelling for indoor spaces such as residences, offices, and commercial areas
- Exterior cladding for building facades requiring robust weather resistance and aesthetic qualities
- Decorative finishes in both modern and traditional architectural projects
- Restoration and heritage works where matching existing non-tongued profiles is required
- Sustainable construction, utilizing renewable softwood materials and eco-friendly modifications
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and suppliers can ensure product consistency, reliable performance in service conditions, and compliance with relevant European market requirements.
Related Standards
Solid wood panelling and cladding are part of a wider regulatory landscape. The following European standards are particularly relevant to FprEN 15146 users:
EN 14915 – Solid wood panelling and cladding – Characteristics, requirements and marking
(For broader regulatory compliance including CE-marking)EN 13647 – Wood flooring, panelling and cladding – Determination of geometrical characteristics
EN 13183 (Parts 1-3) – Moisture content determination for sawn timber
EN 13307-1 – Finger jointed timber requirements

5 Requirements
5.1 General
The softwood species shall be selected with regard to the appearance expected, the suitability for the
intended purpose and the general characteristics of the species itself. All requirements apply at the time
of production unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
Finger jointing according to EN 13307-1 is permitted if agreed upon and specified by the manufacturer.
NOTE Regarding the bonding and glue type other standards and regulations can apply.

5.2 Grading
5.2.1 General
Grading applies to the face only, unless otherwise specified. Machining requirements are covered in 5.4.4
and apply to all grades of all species.
The measurement of features shall be in accordance with EN 1309-3.
The elements may be finished with surface coating. The grading shall be done before coating.
Additionally, to the grading classes given in 5.2.2 different grading classes and quality criteria for
panelling and cladding exist on national and company levels in Europe. Hence, free grades according to
5.2.3 may also be used.
5.2.2 Grading classes
Grading and the features for softwoods (except maritime pine) are given in Table 1. Grading and the
features for maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) are given in Table 2.
A combined grading class, e.g. A/B, is permitted if agreed upon and specified by the manufacturer.
