Overview

EN ISO 1234:1997 - Split Pins is an internationally recognized standard published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and ISO. This standard specifies the characteristics, dimensions, material requirements, and acceptance criteria for split pins-mechanical fasteners widely used in engineering and assembly operations. By aligning with ISO 1234:1997, manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users can ensure product compatibility and interchangeability across global markets.

Key Topics

  • Scope
The standard covers the general and dimensional requirements for split pins used in conjunction with other fasteners such as bolts and clevis pins.

  • Dimensions
EN ISO 1234:1997 provides detailed tables listing nominal sizes and lengths of split pins, enabling precise selection for specific applications.

  • Materials
Split pins under this standard may be manufactured from the following materials:

    • Steel (St)
    • Copper-zinc alloy (Cu Zn)
    • Copper (Cu)
    • Aluminium alloy (Al)
    • Austenitic stainless steel (A)
    • Other materials as agreed between customer and supplier
  • Mechanical Properties & Workmanship

    • Each leg of the split pin must withstand being bent back upon itself without visible signs of fracture, ensuring ductility.
    • Pins should be free of burrs, irregularities, and detrimental defects, with workmanship aimed at functional reliability.
  • Surface Finish

    • The standard allows for plain finishes, protective lubrication, electroplated or phosphate coatings.
    • Coating requirements reference ISO 4042 (Electroplated coatings) and ISO 9717 (Phosphate conversion coatings for metals).
  • Designation System
Split pins are designated by type, nominal size, length, and material, facilitating clear communication and ordering.

Applications

EN ISO 1234:1997 split pins are essential in mechanical engineering, construction, and maintenance settings, serving as secure locking devices. Common applications include:

  • Securing fastener assemblies
    • Used with bolts, clevis pins, shafts, and other components to prevent loosening due to vibration or rotational forces
  • Automotive and machinery assembly
    • Ensures safety in steering, linkage, and braking mechanisms by acting as secondary locking devices
  • Railway and aerospace engineering
    • High reliability demanded in safety-critical environments
  • General equipment maintenance
    • Widely available and easily installed or removed for routine servicing

Selecting the correct dimension and material-according to EN ISO 1234-ensures safety, performance, and compliance with international best practices.

Related Standards

Several other international standards complement EN ISO 1234:1997, enhancing fastener quality and performance:

  • ISO 3269 – Fasteners: Acceptance Inspection
    • Establishes procedures for the acceptance of fasteners, referenced for split pin quality assurance.
  • ISO 4042 – Fasteners: Electroplated Coatings
    • Governs requirements for corrosion-resistant surface coatings.
  • ISO 9717 – Phosphate Conversion Coatings for Metals
    • Specifies methods for protective metal coating, applicable to split pins.
  • Other Fastener Standards
    • Standards for bolts, nuts, and clevis pins ensure integrated system compatibility.

Practical Value

Following EN ISO 1234:1997 ensures that split pins meet international standards for quality and consistency. Adherence reduces the risk of mechanical failure, streamlines procurement, and enhances equipment reliability across diverse industries. By referencing related standards and selecting compliant products, organizations bolster safety, quality, and operational efficiency in all split pin applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 1234 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 2, Fasteners.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 1234:1976),
