Overview
EN ISO 6259-3:2015 - Thermoplastics pipes - Determination of tensile properties - Part 3: Polyolefin pipes (ISO 6259-3:2015) specifies a standardized laboratory method to determine tensile properties of polyolefin pipes. It covers pipes made from polyethylene (PE), cross‑linked polyethylene (PEX), polypropylene (PP) and polybutene (PB), and records the principal results stress at yield and elongation at break. The document is part of the ISO 6259 series and is intended for material and product testing in pipe production, quality control and research.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and materials: Applies to polyolefin pipes (PE, PEX, PP, PB) and gives basic material specifications in informative Annexes A–D.
- Test principle: Uses tensile testing of specimens taken from pipes to determine stress at yield and elongation at break; follows general conditions in ISO 6259‑1 and aligns with ISO 527 principles.
- Test pieces: Defines three specimen types (Type 1, Type 2, Type 3) with specified shapes and dimensions to suit different pipe wall thicknesses.
- Specimen preparation:
- For wall thickness ≤ 12 mm, die cutting is preferred (with care to avoid damage or non‑parallel edges).
- For wall thickness > 12 mm, machining is preferred.
- Conditioning, apparatus and test speed: Requirements reference ISO 6259‑1 and ISO 527‑1 for conditioning, apparatus and test procedure to ensure reproducibility.
- Result reporting: Specifies how to express results (stress at yield, elongation at break) and what information should be included in the test report.
Applications and who uses it
- Pipe manufacturers use EN ISO 6259-3:2015 for material/process control, incoming raw material checks and production quality assurance of polyolefin pipes.
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies apply the method for product verification and compliance testing.
- R&D teams and polymer engineers use the tensile data for material development, formulation optimization and comparing polyolefin grades.
- Specifiers and procurement teams rely on standardized tensile results for product selection and contractual specifications.
Note: The tensile test method is valuable for material characterization and process control but is not intended as a quantitative predictor of long‑term performance where impact, creep or fatigue behavior is critical.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
