The dimensional (diameter and thickness) and weight requirements for the steel pipe are specified and the test requirements for welded pipes are detailed. Lengths of toprail may be of random lengths, unless otherwise specified.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers hot-dipped galvanized welded steel pipe in sizes ranging from 1.315–8.625 in. (33.4 –219.1 mm) outside diameter (OD) inclusive, with nominal (average) wall thickness as given in Table 1 and Table 2. Pipe having other dimensions (Note 2) may be furnished provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification. Pipe ordered under this specification is intended for use as a structural support for fencing in accordance with Specification F1043, Group 1A.
Note 1: Outside diameter size is designated in that fence fittings are designed to securely fit on the outside of the pipe framework.
Note 2: A comprehensive listing of standardized pipe dimensions is contained in ANSI B 36.10.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM F1083-18(2022), published by ASTM International, specifies the requirements for hot-dipped zinc-coated (galvanized), welded steel pipe intended for use in fence structures. This standard applies to steel pipes ranging in outside diameter from 1.315 to 8.625 inches (33.4 to 219.1 mm), with detailed criteria for nominal wall thickness and grades suited for structural fence framework. The specification ensures quality and performance for applications needing durable, corrosion-resistant support pipes.

The galvanized protection provided by hot-dip zinc coating both inside and outside ensures enhanced longevity and resistance to environmental factors. Steel pipe manufactured under this standard is widely used as the structural support for fencing systems, including chain-link and industrial fences, offering security and stability in various settings.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Coverage

    • Applies to welded, galvanized steel pipe used as structural elements in fences
    • Covers Schedule 40 (standard weight) and Schedule 80 (extra strong) pipe
    • Permits other compliant dimensions, as long as key requirements are met
  • Manufacturing Process

    • Made from soft weldable steel produced through electric-furnace, open hearth, or basic-oxygen methods
    • Welded pipe up to 4.5 in. OD may use butt-welding; larger sizes require electric welding
  • Galvanization and Coating

    • Zinc coating is applied using a hot-dip process, both internally and externally for full corrosion resistance
    • Zinc quality must conform to ASTM B6
    • Minimum zinc coating weights are specified to ensure lasting protection
  • Physical and Mechanical Properties

    • Minimum tensile and yield strengths are defined for regular and high-strength grades
    • Detailed limits are set for permissible variations in pipe weight, diameter, and wall thickness
    • Requirements for workmanship, finish, and appearance promote defect-free products and consistent quality
  • Testing and Certification

    • Strip testing per ASTM A90/A90M governs zinc coating weight determination
    • Tensile properties are verified using ASTM E8/E8M
    • Certifications and traceability markings are required for compliance

Applications

Steel pipe produced according to ASTM F1083 is primarily utilized as structural components for:

  • Chain-Link Fence Framework

    • Used for top rails, line posts, corner posts, and brace rails in security and boundary fences
  • Industrial and Commercial Security Fencing

    • Delivers reliable protection for manufacturing sites, warehouses, and secure facilities
  • Public Infrastructure

    • Suitable for fencing around schools, parks, government buildings, and utilities
  • High-Durability Installations

    • The galvanized zinc coating provides weather resistance, making these pipes suitable for outdoor and harsh-environment applications

By ensuring standardization in materials, dimensions, and coatings, ASTM F1083 helps users, specifiers, and contractors achieve durable, consistent, and maintenance-friendly fencing systems that meet public and private sector demands.
