Standard Specification for Copper-Zinc-Lead Alloy (Leaded-Brass) Extruded Shapes

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the requirements for extruded leaded-brass angles, channels, and other architectural shapes of solid cross section produced in Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C38000 and C38500. The material shall conform to the chemical composition specified. For copper alloys in which zinc is specified as the remainder, either copper or zinc is permitted to be taken as the difference between the sum of results for all elements analyzed and 100 %. When copper is so determined, that difference value shall conform to the requirements specified. Tensile strength and hardness of the product furnished shall be determined by tension and Rockwell hardness tests.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes the requirements for extruded leaded-brass angles, channels, and other architectural shapes of solid cross section produced in Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C38000 and C38500.
1.1.1 Pipe, tube, or other hollow section products are not included in this specification.
1.2 Units—The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM B455/B455M-20: Standard Specification for Copper-Zinc-Lead Alloy (Leaded-Brass) Extruded Shapes outlines the requirements for extruded leaded-brass architectural shapes of solid cross section. Issued by ASTM International, this specification applies to Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C38000 and C38500, widely known as leaded-brass alloys. These standards are essential for manufacturers and purchasers to ensure consistent product quality, reliable mechanical properties, and standardized chemical composition for architectural extruded shapes such as angles and channels. The specification provides requirements in both inch-pound and SI (metric) units. Hollow forms like pipe or tube are not covered by this standard.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Coverage:

    • Focuses on solid cross-section extruded leaded-brass shapes, specifically angles, channels, and similar profiles used in architectural applications.
    • Excludes pipes, tubes, and other hollow sections.
    • Applicable to products manufactured from Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C38000 and C38500.
  • Material Requirements:

    • Enforces strict conformance to specified chemical composition, particularly percentages of copper, zinc, and lead as detailed in accompanying tables.
    • Additional elements such as iron, tin, and aluminum are limited to maximum allowable values.
    • Chemical analysis procedures and tolerances are defined for quality assurance.
  • Mechanical Properties:

    • Specifies minimum required tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation for extruded products.
    • Mandates Rockwell hardness testing (M30 temper) as a standard method for verifying product conformity.
  • Dimensions and Tolerances:

    • Dimensions, contours, and tolerances must be provided by the purchaser and included in the order.
    • Straightness tolerances to be agreed upon between purchaser and manufacturer.
  • Ordering and Certification:

    • Orders must detail ASTM designation, alloy UNS number, temper, dimensions, tolerances, form, and quantity.
    • Options for certification, mill test reports, and traceability are available upon request.

Applications

ASTM B455/B455M-20 is essential in various industries and sectors requiring high-quality extruded leaded-brass profiles, especially in architectural and decorative contexts. Common applications include:

  • Architectural Construction: Angles and channels for window frames, door thresholds, decorative trim, and structural accents.
  • Commercial Fixtures: Components for display cases, store fixtures, and other commercial architectural elements.
  • Industrial Uses: Where corrosion resistance and machinability are important, such as in specialty manufacturing and OEM parts.
  • Custom Fabrication: Building custom brass elements requiring precise mechanical properties and specific site conditions.

Following the ASTM B455/B455M-20 standard ensures compatibility, uniformity, and reliability in projects where copper-zinc-lead alloy extrusions are specified.
