(Specification)Standard Specification for Aluminum-Alloy Castings Produced by Squeeze Casting, and the Semi-Solid Thixocast and Rheocast Casting Processes
Standard Specification for Aluminum-Alloy Castings Produced by Squeeze Casting, and the Semi-Solid Thixocast and Rheocast Casting Processes
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the material, chemical and mechanical requirements for aluminum-alloy castings produced by the thixocast, rheocast, semi-solid and squeeze casting processes. It does not apply to castings used in aerospace applications. Castings shall conform to the chemical composition limits and tensile properties specified for each alloy designation, and those produced for governmental or military agencies, or both, shall additionally adhere to specified material and foundry control requirements. Castings shall also pass quality checks based on the following attributes: imperfections; internal soundness; pressure tightness; fillets, ribs, and corners; ejector pins, pin marks, pin flash, and flash removal; casting flash removal; surface finish; die cast lettering and ornamentation; machining stock allowances; and workmanship. Heat treatment and repair recommendations are also included herein.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers aluminum-alloy castings, produced by Squeeze Casting, and the Semi-Solid Thixocast and Rheocast casting processes, designated as shown in Table 1.
1.2 This specification is for aluminum-alloy squeeze castings, and semi-solid Thixocast and Rheocast castings used in general purpose applications. It may not address the mechanical properties, integrity testing, and verification required for highly loaded or safety critical applications.
1.3 Alloy and temper designations are in accordance with ANSI H35.1/H35.1 (M).
1.4 Unless the order specifies the “M” specification designation, the material shall be furnished to the inch-pound units.
1.5 For acceptance criteria for inclusion of new aluminum and aluminum alloys and their properties in this specification, see Annex A1 and Annex A2.
1.6 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.8 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM B969/B969M-18e1 is the standard specification developed by ASTM International for aluminum-alloy castings produced via squeeze casting, semi-solid thixocasting, and rheocasting processes. This standard outlines the essential material, chemical, and mechanical property requirements, as well as quality assurance practices necessary for general purpose aluminum alloy castings. It specifically excludes applications in the aerospace industry.
The standard aims to ensure that cast products made through advanced casting processes such as squeeze casting and semi-solid metal technologies meet consistent expectations for performance, quality, and reliability.
Key Topics
- Scope: Covers all aluminum-alloy castings made by squeeze casting, thixocasting, and rheocasting for general applications (excluding aerospace).
- Material Requirements: Specifies chemical compositions for various aluminum alloys (e.g., 319.0, 356.0, 357.0, A390.0) according to ANSI H35.1/H35.1(M).
- Mechanical Properties: Details expectations for tensile strength and other properties, but does not define mechanical property criteria for highly loaded or safety-critical parts unless explicitly specified.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Refers to North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) product specification standards for tolerances on dimensions, parting lines, core holes, flatness, draft, and machining stock.
- Quality Checks: Outlines inspection criteria such as:
- Surface imperfections
- Internal soundness (radiographic/penetrant testing)
- Pressure tightness
- Fillets, ribs, corners
- Ejector pin marks and flash removal
- Surface finish and die cast lettering
- Heat Treatment and Repair: Provides recommendations regarding heat treatment procedures and allowable repair methods (e.g., welding, impregnation, peening).
- Inspection and Certification: Specifies procedures for lot inspection, product identification, and certification, including special provisions when producing castings for government or military requirements.
- Test Methods: References several ASTM and international test methods for tension, compositional analysis, and radiographic inspection.
Applications
This standard is intended for manufacturers and purchasers of aluminum castings used in automotive, machinery, instrumentation, industrial components, and general engineering fields. It:
- Assures consistent product quality and performance for end users and manufacturers.
- Facilitates procurement and supply chain management by detailing ordering information, acceptance criteria, and inspection procedures.
- Provides guidance for contract and purchase order requirements, including optional or additional testing and inspection when required.
- Enforces traceability and marking practices to ensure that castings are identifiable by lot, part, and source.
- Defines procedures for the repair and acceptance of castings, ensuring reliability in critical, non-aerospace applications.
Related Standards
Organizations working with ASTM B969/B969M-18e1 should also consider the following standards for comprehensive cast product management:
- ASTM B179: Aluminum Alloys in Ingot and Molten Forms for Castings from All Processes

Analysis shall be made for the elements for which limits are shown in this table.
C
The following applies to all specified limits in this table: For purposes of determining conformance to these limits, an observed value or a calculated value obtained from analysis shall be rounded to the nearest unit
in the last right-hand place of figures used in expressing the specified limit in accordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29.
D
In case of discrepancy between the values listed in Table 1 and those listed in the “Designations and Composition Limits for Aluminum Alloys in the Form of Castings and Ingot (known as the “Pink Sheets”)”,
the composition limits registered with the Aluminum Association and published in the “Pink Sheets” shall be considered the controlling composition.

“Others” includes listed elements for which no specific limit is shown as well as unlisted metallic elements. The producer may analyze samples for trace elements not specified in the specification. However, such analysis
is not required and may not cover all metallic “Others” elements. Should any analysis by the producer or the purchaser establish that an “Others” element exceeds the limit of “Each” or that the aggregate of several “Others”
elements exceeds the limit of “Total,” the material shall be considered nonconforming.

Other Elements—Total shall be the sum of unspecified metallic elements 0.010 % or more, rounded to the second decimal before determining the sum.
G
If iron exceeds 0.45, manganese content shall not be less than one-half iron content.

The Aluminum Association ruling on the number of decimal places to which Mg percent is expressed is exempted for some long standing alloys. See A2.2.6.
