ASTM B532-85(2021)
(Specification)Standard Specification for Appearance of Electroplated Plastic Surfaces
General Information
- Abstract
ABSTRACT
This specification limits the amounts and types of visual defects that can be tolerated on decoratively electroplated surfaces of plastic products. The appearance of surfaces will be separately evaluated depending on the prominence of the surface under conditions of ordinary use. The classifications are: surface A; surface B; and surface C. The part under test shall be evaluated in the same relative position as it will normally be viewed under usual conditions of use.
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Where electroplated plastics are used for decorative purposes, the appearance after plating is important. This standard provides a means of evaluating the appearance of the substrate and the coating.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification limits the amounts and types of visual defects that can be tolerated on decoratively electroplated surfaces of plastic products. The quantity of defects permitted shall be specified by the purchaser.
1.2 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

ASTM B532-85(2021) - Standard Specification for Appearance of Electroplated Plastic Surfaces
Overview
ASTM B532-85(2021): Standard Specification for Appearance of Electroplated Plastic Surfaces establishes requirements for the visual quality of decoratively electroplated plastic parts. Developed by ASTM International and endorsed by key industry organizations, this standard defines permissible visual defects and provides a basis for evaluating substrate and coating appearance. The specification ensures that electroplated plastic components used for decorative or functional applications meet consistent appearance criteria, supporting manufacturing quality and customer satisfaction.
Key Topics
- Visual Defect Limitations: Specifies permissible types and amounts of visual defects (such as sink marks, scratches, pits, blisters, and more) on the surfaces of electroplated plastics.
- Surface Classifications: Surfaces are segmented into classifications based on their prominence in final use:
- Surface A: Most noticeable areas, evaluated rigorously for defects.
- Surface B: Adjacent and somewhat less noticeable areas, with moderate tolerance.
- Surface C: Areas not readily seen except by close or angled inspection, with greater tolerance.
- Surface D: Areas not visible during normal use; generally excluded from strict requirements.
- Evaluation Procedures:
- Surfaces are inspected under standard lighting conditions at a distance of 600-900 mm.
- Evaluation occurs with the part in its usual orientation as experienced in actual use.
- Observers conducting the inspection must have 20/20 vision, with correction if needed.
- Purchaser-Specified Criteria: Quantity and size of allowable defects are typically specified by the purchaser, ensuring the standard's flexibility to fit diverse industry requirements.
Applications
This standard is broadly applicable where decorative electroplated plastics are used, ensuring a uniform and market-appropriate appearance for products such as:
- Automotive trim and interior components
- Consumer electronics and appliances
- Sanitary fittings and plumbing products
- Furniture and decorative fixtures
- Ornamental and display items
Manufacturers, quality control teams, designers, and suppliers rely on ASTM B532 to ensure that electroplated plastic surfaces meet agreed-upon appearance criteria, reducing disputes and supporting product consistency. Compliance with this specification can enhance brand reputation, reduce returns, and safeguard end-user satisfaction.
Related Standards
To provide a robust framework for evaluating electroplated plastic surfaces, ASTM B532 references several related standards, including:
- ASTM B374: Terminology Relating to Electroplating - Provides essential definitions and terms to ensure clarity and consistency in usage.
- ASTM D883: Terminology Relating to Plastics - Clarifies terms specific to plastics, supporting accurate communication across industries.
Other related standards and guides in the field of metallic and inorganic coatings or decorative finishes may also be applicable based on end-use requirements and industry best practices.
