(Specification)Standard Specification for Reinforced Bituminous Flashing Sheets for Roofing and Waterproofing
Standard Specification for Reinforced Bituminous Flashing Sheets for Roofing and Waterproofing
ABSTRACT
This specification covers two types of factory prepared reinforced bituminous flashing sheets used for roofing and waterproofing systems. The bitumen used may be asphalt, coal-tar pitch, or polymer modified bitumen. The reinforcement may include any one or a combination of organic (wood fiber), polyester, or glass fiber felts, woven fabrics, or thermoplastic films. Fine mineral powders, granules, or metal foils may be used as surfacing. Specimens shall be sampled, be tested for, and consequently conform to dimensional and physical properties, as follows: mass; thickness; load-strain properties; impact resistance; tear strength and resistance; flexibility; breaking load; and elongation at break. Calculation procedures for the mean, estimated standard deviation, and mean variance of test values from specimens tested before and after heat conditioning are also detailed.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers factory-prepared reinforced bituminous sheet used in flashing. The bitumen used may be asphalt, coal-tar pitch, or polymer-modified bitumen. The reinforcement may include any one or a combination of organic (wood fiber), polyester, or glass fiber felts, woven fabrics, or thermoplastic films. Fine mineral powders, granules, or metal foils may be used as surfacing.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.3 The following precautionary statement pertains only to the test method portion, Section 7, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D6221/D6221M-00(2021) is the internationally recognized standard specification for factory-prepared, reinforced bituminous flashing sheets used in roofing and waterproofing systems. Published by ASTM International, this standard outlines the requirements for performance, composition, and testing of flashing sheets, ensuring reliable protection for building structures against water infiltration. Covering both heavy-duty (Type 1) and lightweight (Type 2) flashing sheets, this specification applies to products manufactured using asphalt, coal-tar pitch, or polymer-modified bitumen, with reinforcement made from organic, polyester, glass fiber materials, woven fabrics, or thermoplastic films.
Key Topics
- Material Types: The specification covers flashing sheets composed of asphalt, coal-tar pitch, or polymer-modified bitumen. Reinforcement materials can include one or a combination of organic felts, polyester, glass fiber felts, woven fabrics, or thermoplastic films.
- Sheet Types:
- Type 1: Heavy, thick flashing sheets
- Type 2: Lightweight, thin flashing sheets
- Surface Finishes: Surfacing can incorporate fine mineral powders, granules, or metal foils for enhanced weathering and durability.
- Physical and Dimensional Properties:
Sheets must meet specific requirements for:- Mass and thickness
- Breaking load and elongation at break
- Tear strength and resistance
- Flexibility
- Impact resistance
- Testing Procedures: The standard specifies detailed test methods for evaluating properties before and after heat conditioning, ensuring materials maintain performance in varied conditions. Calculations for mean values, variance, and acceptance criteria are clearly defined.
Applications
ASTM D6221/D6221M-00(2021) plays a critical role in the construction and maintenance of roofing and waterproofing systems:
- Primary Flashing Membranes: These bituminous flashing sheets serve as essential barriers, preventing water intrusion at transitions, edges, and penetrations in roof assemblies.
- Diverse Construction Projects: Applicable to both commercial and residential roofing as well as below-grade waterproofing, the standard guides material selection for projects demanding high durability and flexibility.
- Quality Assurance: By adhering to the standard, manufacturers and contractors ensure consistent product performance and compliance with international best practices.
- Climate Resilience: The standard’s heat conditioning requirements help guarantee flashing sheets perform reliably in a range of environmental conditions.
Related Standards
Several referenced ASTM standards complement and support the requirements set out in ASTM D6221/D6221M-00(2021):
