Overview
ASTM B468-10(2020): Standard Specification for Welded UNS N08020 Alloy Tubes defines the requirements for welded tubes made from nickel-iron-chromium alloy N08020, as well as N08024 and N08026, intended for use in boiler, heat exchanger, and condenser applications where corrosion resistance and performance at varying temperatures is critical. The standard specifies material, manufacturing, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and test methods to ensure reliable product quality for general corrosion-resisting, and low- or high-temperature service.
Key Topics
Scope and Size Range
- Applies to welded tubes with outside diameters from 1/8 to 5 inches (3.18 to 127 mm).
- Wall thickness ranges from 0.015 to 0.500 inches (0.38 to 12.70 mm).
- Tubes outside these dimensions may be furnished if they comply with all other requirements.
Material and Manufacturing
- Tubes must be manufactured from flat-rolled stock through automatic welding, with no addition of filler metal.
- After welding and prior to heat treatment, tubes are cold-worked either in the weld area or both in the weld and base metal.
- Specific heat treatments: stabilized-annealed (for N08020), annealed (for N08024), or solution-annealed (for N08026).
Chemical and Mechanical Requirements
- Tubing must conform to defined composition limits for elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, and others.
- Mechanical property requirements include:
- Minimum tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.
- Flattening tests and flange tests are performed on tube ends.
- Each tube is subjected to a pressure test or a nondestructive electric test as specified.
Order and Certification
- Purchasers must specify details such as quantity, UNS number, dimensions, product analysis requirements, and whether certification of tests is necessary.
Safety and Compliance
- The standard underscores user responsibility for safety, health, and environmental practices.
- Developed in line with international standardization principles and WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) guidelines.
Applications
ASTM B468 welded UNS N08020 alloy tubes are widely used in:
- Boilers - For reliable heat transfer in environments requiring exceptional corrosion resistance.
- Heat Exchangers - In chemical processing, power generation, and oil & gas applications, where tubes are exposed to aggressive media and varying temperatures.
- Condensers - Utilized in marine, petrochemical, or power plant settings.
- General Industrial Service - Suitable for any application demanding durable, corrosion-resistant tubing operating in demanding thermal conditions.
The alloy’s resistance to corrosion, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking makes it particularly valuable in settings involving acids, chlorides, and other aggressive substances.
Related Standards
Several related ASTM standards support and complement ASTM B468:
- ASTM B751 - General Requirements for Nickel and Nickel Alloy Welded Tube.
- ASTM A262 - Practices for Detecting Susceptibility to Intergranular Attack in Austenitic Stainless Steels.
- ASTM B899 - Terminology Relating to Non-ferrous Metals and Alloys.
Compliance with ASTM B468 ensures standardized quality and performance for welded UNS N08020 alloy tubing, facilitating global trade and reliable implementation in critical industrial systems.
