Standard Specification for Synthetic Red Iron Oxide Pigment
ABSTRACT
This specification covers synthetic red iron oxide pigment for use in paints and coatings manufactured by any of the following: calcination of iron salts, precipitation from iron salts, calcination of synthetic iron oxide, and product of organic reduction. The pigment shall conform to the requirements prescribed for the following: total iron oxide content, sulfur content, moisture and other volatile matter content, organic coloring matter content, coarse particles in dry pigments (total residue retained), matter soluble in water, and pH value. If the pigments are available in a range of colors, the mass color and the tinting strength or character of the tint formed by mixture with a white pigment shall be within the specified limits. The sampling and test methods to determine conformance of the pigments to the specified properties are given.

Overview
ASTM D3721-05(2019) is the official international standard specification developed by ASTM International for synthetic red iron oxide pigment. This standard covers pigments produced by various methods, including:
- Calcination of iron salts
- Precipitation from iron salts
- Calcination of synthetic iron oxide
- Organic reduction processes
Synthetic red iron oxide pigments are widely used as essential colorants and functional materials, primarily in paints and coatings. By adhering to ASTM D3721, manufacturers and purchasers ensure consistent quality, performance, and safety for pigment products used in industrial and commercial applications.
Key Topics
The standard establishes specific requirements and properties for synthetic red iron oxide pigments, including:
- Total iron oxide content: Specifies a minimum content to ensure color intensity and opacity.
- Sulfur content: Limits to prevent adverse chemical interactions.
- Moisture and volatile matter: Sets a maximum level for durability and storage stability.
- Organic coloring matter: Requires absence to maintain pigment purity.
- Coarse particles: Restricts the percentage of residue retained on a 45-µm sieve to ensure a fine, consistent texture.
- Matter soluble in water: Imposes limits to avoid issues in formulation and application.
- pH value: Specifies a minimum pH for pigment suitability in various coating systems.
- Color and tinting strength: For pigments offered in a range of shades, the mass color and tint formed with white pigment must fall within agreed limits.
The document outlines sampling and testing procedures to determine compliance, referencing ASTM test methods for chemical analysis, moisture content, particle size, water solubility, and color/tint strength.
Applications
Synthetic red iron oxide pigment specified under ASTM D3721-05(2019) offers multiple applications across industrial, architectural, and commercial sectors, primarily where color durability and quality consistency are necessary. Typical uses include:
- Paints and coatings: For both protective and decorative finishes in construction, automotive, and industrial equipment.
- Colorants for plastics and rubbers: In products requiring heat stability and UV resistance.
- Construction materials: Such as colored concrete, tiles, and pavers.
- Inks and art supplies: For stable and vibrant red hues.
The pigment’s defined properties make it ideal for use in high-quality, long-lasting applications where aesthetics and performance must meet rigorous standards.
Related Standards
For comprehensive quality assurance, the following ASTM standards are referenced within ASTM D3721-05(2019):
- ASTM D50: Test Methods for Chemical Analysis of Yellow, Orange, Red, and Brown Pigments
- ASTM D185: Test Methods for Coarse Particles in Pigments
- ASTM D280: Test Methods for Hygroscopic Moisture and Volatile Substances in Pigments
