ASTM F1006-86(2022)
(Specification)Standard Specification for Entrainment Separators for Use in Marine Piping Applications
Standard Specification for Entrainment Separators for Use in Marine Piping Applications
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the minimum requirements for the pressure-temperature rating, testing, and making of pressure-containing vessels for entrainment separators. Entrainment separators covered in this specification shall be designed according to the lowest pressure-temperature rating of any individual component, or as established by proof tests. Test water temperature and entrainment separator temperature must be at equilibrium before hydrostatic test pressure is applied. All possible air pockets must be purged while the entrainment separator vessel is being filled with water. External equipment not to be pressurized with the entrainment separator should be isolated or disconnected before applying the hydrostatic test pressure. Hydrostatic test pressure shall be applied gradually to the entrainment separator and held stationary at each increment for a sufficient time in order that a visual inspection can be made for leaks or deformation of the vessel.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for the pressure-temperature rating, testing, and making of pressure-containing vessels for entrainment separators.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 6, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM F1006-86(2022) is the internationally recognized standard specification developed by ASTM International for entrainment separators used in marine piping applications. This standard specifies the minimum requirements for the pressure-temperature rating, testing, and manufacturing of pressure-containing vessels employed as entrainment separators. The document is essential for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of marine piping systems, particularly those where the removal of entrained liquids from a gas (vapor) stream is critical.
As mandated, this standard aligns with internationally recognized standardization principles established by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee, reinforcing its relevance and global applicability for marine and offshore industries.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines the minimum requirements for pressure-temperature ratings, construction, and testing procedures for entrainment separators in marine piping.
- Material Selection: Stipulates that all materials used must meet the chemical and physical standards outlined by referenced specifications such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and other relevant standards.
- Design and Construction: Entrainment separators must be designed per the lowest pressure-temperature rating of any individual component unless validated by proof tests.
- Terminology: Clearly defines key terms, such as “entrainment separator,” “hydrostatic test,” “pressure rating,” and associated parameters.
- Testing Procedures: Outlines hydrostatic testing requirements, ensuring all vessels undergo pressure tests at 1.5 times their maximum allowable working pressure, and details the process for calibration of test gauges and leak inspections.
- Labeling and Marking: Specifies the information that must appear on each separator, including manufacturer details, ratings, serial numbers, relevant codes, and year of fabrication.
- Safety and Compliance: Emphasizes the user’s responsibility for health, safety, and regulatory compliance, highlighting the importance of establishing operational protocols.
Applications
Entrainment separators qualified under ASTM F1006-86(2022) are principally used in:
- Marine Piping Systems: Removal of entrained liquids from gas or vapor lines on ships and marine platforms.
- Offshore Facilities: Deployment in offshore oil and gas installations requiring reliable separation of fluids from process lines.
- Shipboard Machinery: Protection of mechanical equipment by preventing liquid carryover in compressed air or steam systems.
- Piping Integrity Management: Assurance of vessel conformity for new builds, retrofits, or routine maintenance involving pressure-containing components exposed to varying marine operational conditions.
These robust separators contribute to operational safety, extended equipment life, and compliance with statutory and regulatory marine requirements.
Related Standards
ASTM F1006-86(2022) interrelates with several key industry and regulatory documents, including:
- ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Section II, VIII): Guidance on material and vessel design.
- ANSI Pipe and Fitting Standards: Includes ANSI B2.1, B16.1, B16.3, B16.4, and B16.5 for threaded, forged, and flanged fitting requirements.
- MSS (Manufacturers Standardization Society) Standards: Such as MSS-SP-51 for corrosion-resistant flanges and fittings.
- Military Standards: MIL-F-1183 for bronze cast fittings.
- Other ASTM and ASME Specifications: Covering gray iron, ductile iron, copper alloys, and pressure vessel materials.
Utilizing ASTM F1006-86(2022) in conjunction with these standards ensures comprehensive compliance and optimized performance for entrainment separators across marine applications.
