Overview
ASTM D2178/D2178M-15a(2021), published by ASTM International, is the standard specification for asphalt glass felt used in roofing and waterproofing applications. This standard specifies the requirements for glass felts impregnated with asphalt, designed for use with built-up roof systems and waterproofing systems. The standard supports industry consistency in the production, performance, and application of asphalt-impregnated glass felts, providing vital guidance for manufacturers, specifiers, contractors, and inspectors in the roofing and waterproofing sectors.
Key Topics
- Material Composition: Defines the base felt as a thin, porous sheet made from uniformly distributed glass fibers, with or without reinforcing stranded glass yarns, and bonded by a water-resistant resinous binder.
- Asphalt Impregnation: Describes impregnation requirements, allowing for asphalt modified with mineral stabilizers to ensure even coating and coverage across all glass fibers.
- Product Types: Covers two primary types of asphalt glass felt - Type IV and Type VI - each with specific requirements for pinholes, physical properties, and mass.
- Physical Properties & Dimensions: Specifies minimum breaking strength, pliability, roll width, area, mass per area, ash content, and other critical dimensions necessary for compliance.
- Workmanship & Appearance: Outlines quality control criteria, including uniform asphalt distribution, absence of visible defects, and correct placement of laying lines for ease of installation.
- Testing & Inspection: References methods for sampling, net dry mass determination, ashing, and maintaining consistent quality through regular inspection procedures.
- Packaging & Marking: Details packaging methods to prevent unrolling or damage and prescribes product and supplier marking for clear traceability.
Applications
- Built-Up Roofing Systems: Frequently used as a reinforcing component in multi-ply, built-up roof membranes, providing structural integrity and resistance to weathering when used with compatible roofing asphalts.
- Waterproofing Systems: Deployed as a core membrane in below-grade or above-grade waterproofing applications when used with appropriate dampproofing asphalts.
- Commercial and Industrial Buildings: Integral in large-scale roofing and waterproofing projects, ensuring long-term performance and protection against moisture ingress.
- Infrastructure Projects: Utilized in the waterproofing of bridges, tunnels, and substructures where robust, durable membranes are critical for longevity.
- Uniform Quality Assurance: Enables specifiers and quality assurance personnel to verify material compliance for new projects and replacements in renovation projects.

Practical Value
Implementing the requirements of ASTM D2178/D2178M-15a(2021) provides several key benefits:
- Consistent Material Performance: Ensures asphalt glass felt meets minimum requirements for strength, flexibility, and durability.
- Regulatory Compliance: Aligns with widely recognized safety and environmental practices, meeting the needs of global construction markets.
- Project Reliability: Reduces risk of premature failures in roofing and waterproofing systems, leading to cost savings on maintenance and repairs.
- Traceable Quality Assurance: Structured marking and inspection procedures simplify procurement processes and ongoing quality verification.
By adhering to this ASTM standard, professionals across the roofing and waterproofing industries contribute to robust infrastructure, improved building longevity, and enhanced safety for building occupants and assets.
