(Specification)Standard Specification for Copper-Nickel-Silicon Alloy Rod and Bar
Standard Specification for Copper-Nickel-Silicon Alloy Rod and Bar
ABSTRACT
This specification establishes the requirements for copper-nickel-silicon alloy rods and bars in straight lengths produced from Copper Alloy UNS No. C64700. The materials for manufacture shall be cast billets or ingots of such soundness and structure as to be suitable for processing by hot extrusion or rolling, and finished by cold working, annealing, cooling, straightening, and precipitation heat treatment to produce finished products that achieve the required properties. Products shall be tested and shall adhere to dimensional (diameter, length, straightness, and edge contour), mechanical (tensile and yield strength, and elongation), electrical resistivity, and chemical composition requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes the requirements for copper-nickel-silicon alloy rod and bar produced from Copper Alloy UNS No. C64700 in straight lengths.
1.2 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM B411/B411M-14(2019) is the international standard specification developed by ASTM for copper-nickel-silicon alloy rod and bar produced from Copper Alloy UNS No. C64700. This standard details the requirements for manufacturing, dimensions, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing of these rods and bars supplied in straight lengths. The specification is aligned with the internationally recognized principles of standardization, ensuring broad acceptance in global markets.
Copper-nickel-silicon rods and bars are produced via hot extrusion or rolling, followed by cold working and heat treatment steps like annealing and precipitation hardening. These processes ensure that the products meet stringent requirements for soundness, structure, and performance. The standard is widely referenced in industries requiring high-quality copper alloys with reliable mechanical and electrical properties.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: Specifies copper-nickel-silicon alloy (UNS C64700) as the material, ensuring premium soundness and structure.
- Manufacturing Processes: Coverage includes casting, extrusion or rolling, cold working, annealing, cooling, straightening, and precipitation heat treatment.
- Dimensional Standards: Establishes precise tolerances for diameter, length, straightness, and edge contour.
- Mechanical Properties: Mandates minimum tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation for various forms and sizes.
- Electrical Properties: Includes requirements for electrical resistivity, with specified ranges for conductivity, suitable for electrical applications.
- Chemical Composition: Sets permissible levels for key elements like nickel, silicon, lead, iron, zinc, and copper.
- Ordering Information: Details clear instructions for specifying product form, dimensions, temper, and special requirements.
- Test Methods: References recognized test methods for properties and chemical analysis, including ASTM E8/E8M for tensile tests and ASTM B193 for resistivity.
Applications
Copper-nickel-silicon alloy rods and bars compliant with ASTM B411/B411M-14(2019) are valued for their well-balanced mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, making them fitting for diverse industrial uses, such as:
- Electrical Connector Manufacturing: The specified electrical resistivity range supports applications in electrical connectors, switches, and components where conductivity and strength are essential.
- Automotive Industry: Used in the production of critical components requiring good wear and fatigue resistance, especially in environments subject to corrosion.
- Aerospace and Defense: The strict requirements for mechanical and dimensional tolerances ensure these materials are suitable for aerospace fittings, fasteners, and machinery parts.
- Machined Parts: Amenable to precise machining, making the alloy suitable for custom hardware, marine equipment, and specialized fasteners.
Industries rely on these copper-nickel-silicon rods and bars where enhanced mechanical, chemical, and physical properties are crucial to product performance and longevity.
