(Specification)Standard Specification for Felt
Standard Specification for Felt
ABSTRACT
This specification covers all standard types of felt in the form of rolls and sheets that are suitable for mechanical use. Certain special-purpose felts are also covered. Felts shall be classified according to thickness and mass, properties and general descriptions. Felt classifications shall be based on the Society of Automotive Engineers Specification and the US Department of Defense Federal Specification. Special-purpose felts shall be classified under special-purpose classification. The chemical properties of roll and sheet felt shall conform to the specified requirements. The physical properties of roll and sheet felt such as width, thickness, and mass (weight) per unit area, shall conform to the requirements specified. All the properties, except color, of felt shall be determined in accordance to the test method specified.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers all standard types of felt in the form of rolls and sheets that are suitable for mechanical use. Certain special-purpose felts are also covered.
1.2 This specification is not applicable to felt-like products that utilize weaving, knitting, stitching, or bonding such as papermaker's felt.
1.3 Trade practice in the felt industry deals in pounds, yards, and inches, therefore the values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values in SI units are provided as information only.
1.3.1 The specification referenced in 2.2 uses only inch-pound units.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D2475-22: Standard Specification for Felt establishes comprehensive requirements for all standard types of felt in roll and sheet form suitable for mechanical use, as well as certain special-purpose felts. Issued by ASTM International, this specification defines classification systems for felt based on thickness, mass, and key physical and chemical properties. The standard serves as a recognized benchmark for manufacturers, suppliers, and users seeking consistency and reliability in the choice and application of industrial and specialty felt materials.
Key Topics
- Felt Scope: Applies exclusively to nonwoven felt products made by interlocking and consolidating fibers, excluding felt-like materials produced by weaving, knitting, stitching, or bonding (such as papermaker’s felt).
- Classification Systems: Felts are classified by thickness, mass, quality index, and method of manufacture (roll or sheet). They correspond to established systems by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the U.S. Department of Defense Federal Specification (C-F-206).
- Forms and Properties:
- Roll Forms: Typically less dense, thinner felts produced in continuous lengths.
- Sheet Forms: Thicker, denser felts supplied in flat, cut-to-size pieces.
- Physical Properties: Requirements for thickness, mass (weight per unit area), width, and tolerances described in structured tables for standard and specialty felts.
- Chemical Properties: Conformance to chemical composition requirements, including pH and solubility, as agreed upon between supplier and purchaser.
- Testing and Conformance:
- Tests for Properties: Methods for verifying thickness, mass, tensile and split resistance, and color, aligned with referenced ASTM test methods.
- Sampling and Acceptance: Procedures for lot and laboratory sampling, evaluation protocol, and dispute resolution to ensure compliance and quality control.
Applications
The ASTM D2475-22 standard is widely used in multiple industries where felt’s unique physical and mechanical properties are essential. Key applications include:
- Mechanical Uses: Seals, gaskets, and wipers in machinery and vehicles where resilience, compressibility, and resistance to wear are critical.
- Insulation: Padding for vibration dampening, acoustic insulation, and thermal insulation in automotive and industrial equipment.
- Decorative and Apparel Uses: Specialty felts for garment lining, coat fronts, footwear, orthotic and surgical supports, and decorative textile applications.
- Filter and Padding Materials: Used in appliances, packaging, and filtration systems for their absorbency and durability.
- OEM and Maintenance: Supply chain specification and quality assurance for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and maintenance providers seeking consistent performance and dimensions.
