(Specification)Standard Specification for Copper-Silicon Alloy Wire for General Applications
Standard Specification for Copper-Silicon Alloy Wire for General Applications
ABSTRACT
This specification establishes the requirements for round, rectangular, and square copper-silicon alloy wires with Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C65100 and 65500 for general applications other than electrical transmission cables. Tempers available under this specification are O61 (annealed), H00 (1/8 hard), H01 (¼ hard), H02 (½ hard), H04 (hard), and H08 (spring). Materials shall be tested and adhere to dimensional (mass, diameter, thickness, and width), mechanical (tensile and bending strength, and elongation), chemical composition, and grain size requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes the requirements for round, rectangular, and square wire for general applications other than for electrical transmission cable. The alloys involved are UNS Nos. C65100 and C65500.
1.2 Units—The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM B99/B99M-15(2021) establishes the requirements for round, rectangular, and square copper-silicon alloy wire used in a wide array of general applications, excluding electrical transmission cables. This internationally recognized standard from ASTM applies to products manufactured from copper alloy UNS designations C65100 and C65500 and covers specifications related to dimensions, mechanical properties, chemical composition, and grain size. Its adoption helps ensure product consistency, quality, and regulatory compliance for manufacturers, suppliers, and end users.
Key Topics
- Applicable Alloys: Specifies requirements for UNS C65100 and C65500 copper-silicon alloys.
- Wire Types: Covers round, rectangular, and square wires for non-electrical end uses.
- Temper Grades: Details multiple temper codes including O61 (annealed), H00 (eighth-hard), H01 (quarter-hard), H02 (half-hard), H04 (hard), and H08 (spring), suiting various application needs.
- Mechanical Properties: Defines tensile strength and elongation requirements based on alloy type and temper.
- Dimensional Controls: Sets permissible tolerances for mass, diameter, thickness, and width per referenced standards.
- Chemical Composition: Includes specific limits for elements such as silicon, manganese, lead, iron, zinc, and nickel/cobalt, ensuring performance and process compatibility.
- Grain Size Requirements: For annealed temper wires, standard grain size and recrystallization criteria ensure optimal mechanical performance and usability.
- Testing and Inspection: References ASTM test methods for tension, chemical analysis, and grain size, ensuring conformity and product verification.
Applications
Copper-silicon alloy wire manufactured to ASTM B99/B99M-15(2021) is widely used in:
- General engineering and industrial manufacturing: Suitable for components that require a balance of mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and formability.
- Automotive and transportation: Utilized in springs, fasteners, clips, and connectors where non-electrical copper alloys are specified.
- Mechanical assemblies: Ideal for hardware, metalworking, and fabricated parts not involved in electrical transmission.
- Consumer products: Employed in appliances, electronics hardware, and sporting goods where superior mechanical properties and reliable performance are critical.
The standard’s detailed requirements for physical properties and mechanical performance make it instrumental for industries seeking uniformity and reliability in non-electrical copper-silicon alloy wire.
